I had to post this somewhere because this kids idea is just freaking awesome and i figured the people on this forum would also appreciate his handy work.

its sweet until his parents go to actually put a landline into his bedroom and then call the phone repair man to find out why there is no dial tone!!!

it was featured on engadget.com here is a link to his tutorial though.

P.S. not really a dell specific thing but i didnt know where else to post it and i thought it was worthy of posting!

Very devious indeed. But there's software that can encrypt 'sensitive' files and directories.

    Hang on a minute.
The USB drive is small enough to keep in your pocket etc, so why go to all this trouble???

    I was wondering this myself!

and what if you forget to take it out when your momma washes your jeans, or you leave it on your desk for someone to find!

Indeed there is, and it'd be less hassle. But this is a solution which is vastly unlikely to be stolen or searched for.

I like how this young man thinks. :)

As for throughput... doubt it'd matter over such a short cable. But for a longer run, I'd look at using twisted-pair cat5...

I like how that guy thinks that all of the "thoughts I write down" are worth all that. In reality, he's probably like, "OMG, that chick has big breasts!!!!! OMG LOL!!!!!" Yeah, I wish I could get my hands on that, David Thoreau.

Yeah this is a case of using a rocket launcher when a rubber band gun would've done the job.

Why not just pocket the USB device, or say, hide it in the same wall socket and take it out whenever you needed it?

Genius, but def. a waste of time haha :)

Hey, most innovations are thought up by people who have too much time on their hands. ;) Now I got nothing against what he has done, I actually thoughtthe project is really cool, although a little too complicated for me.

Yeah, innovation being the key word. I see nothing innovative about what he did, although it's neat...it is really cool, but really has no practical value when there were so much simpler ways to accomplish the same thing.

    Creative indeed...
But really, don't be offended, however I do feel that this is bit of an overkill...

Just encrypt the hidden files, or easier, just lock vista ever time you go for something else.....

....or....just hide the USB! Wouldn't that be a lot easier than going through all that hassel?

    +1 for creativity...

About the most surgery I've ever done is when I dismantled a boom box to remove a tape that had jammed, discovered the film had snapped, so dismantled the tape, tied the film back together, re-built the tape, fixed the boom box, then recorded the tape on to another tape to save it.

That is one of the most useless mods I saw. That reminds me the solar battery powered flash light.

Those flashlights are battery powered. The solar part simply recharges the battery.

Not quite so useless after all...

They are now, but that was a joke from a HK movie ~15 years ago. It works only under direct sunlight. ;)
