    Thanks cin and zeta..

Just a question, have you considered other brand of laptop when you buy dell?
As in you can buy other brand from the retailers immediate rather than waiting for the laptop to come?
is it because your work place or home is quite far from the retailers?

Hey no prob's, and good luck with this BTW....

Nope, I looked at others..and found Dell to be what I wanted...(I think I knew from the start ~ I would be getting a Dell)...and I really didn't mind waiting for the lappy to come...As, I had already procrastinated enough before ordering the 1530. ;)

My home isn't far from other retailers...I just got a good EPP discount, and fell in love with the 1530...so my *fate* was sealed that way! ;) :)

    Hope that helps!

    Cin! :)

What brand of dell laptop you using?
    XPS M1730

    Why do you choose Dell?
Customisable, at the time, most powerful laptop available for easily the best price. Also get a EPP discount due to my work.

What do you use it for?
Mostly home computer, games, surfing internet etc.

    Purchasing
Was it easy to find help for any queries which you had during your purchase?
    Yes

Was the buying process complicated? In what way?
    No

Did you manage to purchase exactly what you wanted for your laptop?
    Yes

What do you like best about it?
The dual 8800's give it awesome performance, can handle any game thrown at it. Love the screen, 17" is great for surfing the internet, games, movies etc.

How secure did you feel during the purchase? I.e. were you worried about internet security etc?
    Felt completely secure.

    Delivery
Did you know exactly when your product was about to arrive?
They gave me an expected delivery date, it arrived exactly on time, very good.

Were the delivery instructions simple to understand?
    Yes

Was the date and time for delivery flexible?
    Yes

Were you confident that you had received what you wanted in good condition? Why?
I was confident it was brand new, everything worked (except for the webcam) but they came out within 1 day and fixed it.

How long a warranty do you have for your notebook?
2 years + accidental damage warranty

When your laptop fails, did you bring the product to the service center or did they provide on-site-repair?
They sent a tech out next day to fix it here at home.

What software and accessories do you use together with your laptop?
Logitech speaker setup, external 500gig HDD, Logitech G7 wireless mouse.

Had the machine for about 7 months now, been faultless. Will be picking up a Zalman NC2000 cooler soonish, and also checking out the 24" Dell monitors.

I originally purchased an XPS M1730 at Christmas, but unfortunately only the 8700 SLi card was available. I received the machine, loved it, but found the performance to be lacking. So I called, explained, and was able to return the machine with a full refund (minus delivery). Now that is service. Consequently, a few months later, the 8800's were released, I then purchased one.

Its for this reason and others that I'll continue to buy from Dell.

i guess mostly of you buy the laptop from the net. Have you all do a research on it or go to retailer to get a feel of the laptop first.

Pommine, after you bought the laptop they still refund you although it is not dell fault. Cool, that a good service provided my dell.

What brand of dell laptop you using?
    Inspiron 1520
    Have you considered other brands?
Not really. I also looked at Alienware, but that's a Dell sub-company
Why do you choose Dell in the end?
I liked the customization features available when building the notebook. You can opt out of some of the bloatware notebooks include (e.g. no trial of norton or mcafee or AOL, etc)
Do you do research before you buy? Where do you get your information about laptop?
I asked in forums for notebook suggestions based on my needs. I was recommened Dell. I checked out the site, made some systems, and liking what I saw, went with the notebook.
What do you use it for?
Besides basic stuff, I use it for gaming and graphically intensive engineering modeling software (Inventor Professional, SolidWorks)
    Purchasing
Was it easy to find help for any queries which you had during your purchase?
I didn't really have any. I knew what I was going to use it for and my budget and winged it from there.

Was the buying process complicated? In what way?
It wasn't. I had criteria I used to search and chose what was available to me.
Did you manage to purchase exactly what you wanted for your laptop? What do you like best about it?
My only gripe was that as I used the Outlet, I managed to get the exact components I wanted, but not the ideal color. Still, the price was unbeatable so I stuck with it.
The graphics card is great on it. It runs all modern and old games at great speeds and isn't a power-hungry monster. Its a year old and still has another good year left before I would consider trading it in.

How secure did you feel during the purchase? I.e. were you worried about internet security etc?
    I never considered this.

    Delivery
Did you know exactly when your product was about to arrive?
Dell's site gives an estimated ship date and delivery date. It also gives tracking numbers, so I had a very good idea of when it was going to arrive.

Were the delivery instructions simple to understand?
    Don't remember

Was the date and time for delivery flexible?
That would depend on the courier I suppose. I was home for my notebook, but note that someone has to sign for the package. If I had missed that delivery, I am sure I would have had the option of calling and scheduling a better time.

Were you confident that you had received what you wanted in good condition? Why?
The notebook had excessive padding, so I was certain nothing happened to it.

How long a warranty do you have for your notebook?
It started with a one year. Due to some issues, I have to have the system exchanged, and extended the remaining warranty to 2 years for the replacement.
When your laptop fails, did you bring the product to the service center or did they provide on-site-repair?
Depends on your warranty. I have at home warranty service so that's where I get my repairs. In the exceptional case that several at home repairs don't fix a problem, they will ask that you send the system in for repairs.
What software and accessories do you use together with your laptop?
Software: MS Office 2007, Steam, Inventor Professional, Solidworks, various games.
Accessories: Logitech USB Mouse, Sennheiser e350 headphones, SimpleTech Signature Mini 120GB external HD, Case Logic Sleeve

    Oh yeah, forgot to mention:

One thing you should also fit into your budget is some sort of external backup HD. The one I have listed is an excellent drive; some also like the Western Digital Passport drives.

External HDs are a bit costly, but are worth it for the extra security of your data. Trust me, it sucks a lot having a HD die on you and not having any backups of your music/video/documents (especially as a student).
If you cannot afford one now, get one within the first month or two and commit to a weekly/bi-weekly sync to the drive.

OR, if you already happen to have a spare drive or two (which happens when you are in the practice of getting a new machine every few years, you can also just purchase an external enclosure for it. That's the cheapest possible way (usually) to get a back up device. I got one for 30 bucks that can handle a SATA or IDE drive. My sadness being that I only have a 65 Gig drive available to me at the moment. But it works like a charm.

Open up any of those external HDD's and you will find that the cases are more like adapters than anything else. Otherwise it is a standard HDD that gets fitted in there. Sweet!

Almost forgot: I am going to take the survey shortcut. "DELL - easy to buy!" But that's it. Service, refund, everything else in my opinion is a struggle.

What brand of dell laptop you using?
    Latitude D630

    Have you considered other brands?
I considered Lenovo (dropped due to pricing, lack of configuration options) Apple (Value for money=nonexistant with the standard Macbook) and HP (dropped due to reservations over previous bad support and quality)

Why do you choose Dell in the end?
Style-I always liked the way the Latitude line looked, also the durability and 3 year warranty. And price too, that was important.

Do you do research before you buy? Where do you get your information about laptop?

Yes, here of course, but besides that, other sites like Cnet and the websites of specific companies

What do you use it for?
Pretty much school at the moment.

    Purchasing
Was it easy to find help for any queries which you had during your purchase?
Yes!, the forums here were a great help, frendly people and great advice. I didn't contact Dell or any other company for assistance though.

Was the buying process complicated? In what way?
    No, very simple.

Did you manage to purchase exactly what you wanted for your laptop? What do you like best about it?
Yes, it took some searching, but I finally found a configuration that was in my price range in the Dell outlet. I really like the battery life the most, it's able to get through all of my classes.

How secure did you feel during the purchase? I.e. were you worried about internet security etc?
Not really, I knew I was buying from a reputable site that used secure encryption during the checkout process.

    Delivery
Did you know exactly when your product was about to arrive?
Not really, and this was my only disappointment, They never gave me a tracking number until the last minute-practically when it was 3 days away from delivery.

Were the delivery instructions simple to understand?
    Simple to understand, yes.

Was the date and time for delivery flexible?
Yes, I had the choice of using express delivery, but I'm cheap and decided to wait.

Were you confident that you had received what you wanted in good condition? Why?
I was slightly apprehensive as I ordered what Dell calls a "scratch and dent" system. But when it arrived, I took a good look at it, and didn't find anything wrong.

How long a warranty do you have for your notebook?
A 3-year warranty though that's the standard for Latitudes. Also, I didn't know this at the time, apparently the first people who ordered my laptop got Complete Care so I'm happy about that :)

When your laptop fails, did you bring the product to the service center or did they provide on-site-repair?
My battery died unexpectedly early-turns out that it's a flaw. It didn't require me to send the whole machine back so they sent me a new battery and I gave them the bad one.

What software and accessories do you use together with your laptop?
Pretty much standard software: Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Office, Windows Media Player, FeedDemon, nothing too fancy :p
