My original 1520 had an LG screen that looked great, but had a system board problem. Dell has sent a replacement that has an AUO screen that is grainy. Can I swap the screens before I send the original one back? Would I need to contact DELL and get permission to do this, would they ever give permission to do this? Would this void the warranty? Thanks.

I am sure if you send both back to them, and kick up a big enough stink, they would probably do it for free.

My guess is that you could swap it and they would never know.

Isn't that why they publish a hardware service manual? :D

Do they track what goes into the laptop by part number? I would be worried someone would find out and it would end up costing you money... I don't know if an LCD swap without Dells permission is acceptable in terms of keeping the warranty intact.

I think you might get away with it, but it might bite you in the butt.

If it was me I would call Dell, get to a supervisor and explain the situation that you will either return the second AOU laptop because the screen is bad or they can let you (or send someone out to) replace your screen with the other laptops screen.

Bear in mind if you break anything while swapping screens you would likely be SOL.

Thanks for the replies. It just kills me to think I will have to deal with DELL again when I have a great LG screen here that would be so easy to put on the 5120 that seems to work so well, but has the bad screen.

Well I would still call up and ask... if you can get permission then you are golden.

There you go..."so easy to put on"...so do it then! LOL, I know I would :)
But I take laptops apart all the time at work, so it's nothing to me :)

And Dell's are MUCH easier than IBM's when swapping screens..

I had pretty much the same issue - my replacement M1330 was perfect, except the screen was worse than the original. I got in contact with Dell and they sent me an onsite technician to swap the screens (and hard drives) for me.

Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and called DELL (good way to waste an hour at work) and got an OK from them to do the swap. It was actually a pretty painless phone call. They gave me a new case number and documented that they did not care if I changed the LCD's as long as I return the old system within 10 days. They also offered for me to return the old one and after they received it back, then they would send a tech with a new screen (an AUO?) to replace it for me. I will do it myself tonight.

He is swapping the lg into his replacement. So he can keep the old lg screen.
