I see that there are HDD caddies available to replace the optical drive. I upgraded my outgoing laptop to SSD with excellent results and would like to do the same for my new 15R, but of course installation is tricky because of the poor accessibility of the hard drive.

I then wondered if the SSD could go into caddy but I have read that a hard drive connected via the SATA port in the optical drive bay can't be a boot drive - can anyone confirm this?

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to boot from some device in the optical bay given that you can boot from the optical drive... even if it is somehow a problem, you can install your boot drive in the "normal" spot, and your secondary drive in the bay.

I read that there is no option in the BIOS to change the HD boot device. Would like to get this confirmed one way or another. It would be nice to not have to dismantle the laptop in order to change install the SDD where the HD is now.

What are you talking about? The F12 at startup will interrupt the normal boot cycle. BIOS should have an option to change the boot order.

I'm still waiting for my new laptop. I'm just repeating what I read elsewhere - apparently the optical drive is recognised as a bootable drive but a second HDD in its place is not, so it's not in the list of bootable drive option. This seems odd to me which is why I was hoping someone would definitively confirm or deny this.
