Alright, I started a thread introducing myself and asking a couple of questions about the Studio 17 Dell is giving me in exchange for my current problem-ridden Inspiron E1705. A member here mentioned the NVIDIA Graphics card on my current machine is superior to the ATI card that is coming on the new one. This, and some of the dislikes I have read here from other Studio owners makes me a little weary, and I just want to make sure I get everything on the new machine I have on the current.
So, Below are my current EXACT specifications on my E1705. Now, I know things like the CPU and RAM will be better on the new machine, but I am afraid that there will be others left out.
They are supposed to be emailing me a list of what is on the new machine before it is built, so I want to be prepared when they do. What in your guys' opinions should I demand/request to be on the new machine to compare?
Inspiron E1705 Intel® Core Duo Processor T2300E (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
LCD Panel 17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife
Memory FREE!1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
Video Card 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7900 GS
Hard Drive 80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Operating System (Office software not included) Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
Network Card Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
Combo/DVD+RW Drives 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Sound Options Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy® ADVANCED HD Audio
Wireless Networking Cards Intel® PRO 3945 and Dell 350 Bluetooth Internal Wireless Cards
Primary Battery 53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
All they have told me so far is the new machine is going to be either a Studio 1735 or Studio 1737, with at least 2ghz RAM, Bluetooth, and a video card. Like I said, I just want to be prepared if they try to low-ball me.
Thanks in advance guys!

i wouldn't expect a lot, ATI 3650, 1.5Ghz Core 2 duo, 2Gb RAM
-
:/
I also noticed, when I bought my E1705 it was priced at $2175. When I build a Studio, as closely comparable to my Inspiron it's under $1100.
Will a comparably equipped Studio 17 be better than my Inspiron E1705? Seems like a dumb question but I know, especially with electronics, that sometimes previous models are better than current models.
Thanks for the help! -
i'd imagine so, and i don't see why Dell or whoever wouldn't give you an Outlet model
-
It will be better especially if you get the 1737 which has the most recent Intel chipset on it. Price doesn't really matter because notebooks are cheaper overall than they were a few years ago.

A Studio 17 with a Mobility Radeon HD 3650 will be almost as fast (if not better) than your current E1705 configuration. Graphics card alone might be slightly slower but the difference is not something to be concerned. According to notebookcheck mobile graphic card benchmarks:
3D Mark........................2001....2003....2005....2006
Nvidia 7900M GS...............24505...14103....5937....3745
Mobility Radeon HD 3650.......21993....9401....7358....3500
But given the fact that you’ll be getting a better CPU, faster RAM, a newer GPU with Direct X 10.1 support (opposed to 7900’s 9c) and a faster Hard disk, I think the overall performance would be better. I think you are getting a reasonably good deal.
Keep in mind that DELL is only bound to give you an equivalent or better performing notebook in the same class (Studio = old inspiron); they don’t have to match the original retail price, also as atbnet said, current prices are cheaper than what it used to be.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Thanks for the info guys. The fact that notebooks are cheaper now does make sense.
I am a graphic artist, and my current e1705 is just good enough to do most of my work on, so I just want to make sure the new one will be comparable. I have read on a couple boards, mainly this one lol, that the ATI card is not as good as the GeForce so that had me a little worried.
As soon as I get the new one I'll make a thread about my trials and tribulations with this one, and what I had to do to get this one replaced, lol.
Keep the feedback and suggestions coming, anything and everything helps! -
Question:
I just looked at my Dell account online, and they are showing a system in production for me. I checked the build list and it's a little, *ahem* MORE, than what I thought I was getting. Is this build list they have for the unit in production precisely accurate?
I just would rather it not be a 'too good to be true' thing, lol.
Thanks! -
So, what are you getting now ? an XPS m1730 with dual 8800GTXs or something?
