Hi,
Got an order in with Dell atm here in the (somewhat Sunny, well today anyway) UK, for a M1530 XPS.
I purchased it on the 25th Jan with a EDD of 13th of Feb (which I am not expecting to be met, despite what Dell say!).
As more and more Laptops are shipping lately with
Penryn (and the fact Scan.co.uk are selling the T8300 and T7500 CPU's for £153.76 each, (T9300 is £201.11))
I was curious (as I cannot put my hands on any figures), how the T7500 is compares to what IMO is its replacement the T8300. I know they are clock for clock slightly better, the T8300 is clocked at 2.4ghz instead of the T7500's 2.2ghz, but the T7500 does have 1MB more Cache on its side.
Now the thing that is crossing my mind is... (probably the same as others who read here, but don't post!) if there are going to be delays - is it worth stopping the order with the T7500 and waiting for the T8300.
The only things that are making me stay with what I have is.. the fact I have a 1440x900 screen on order plus I purchased in January with the 10% sale. You can't, for now at least configure a M1530 XPS in the UK with a 1440x900 screen for any less than £1049. If I configure the same system I purchased in January right now, I would have the low res screen plus I would be paying over £50 more for the system.
I also expect Dell won't be having many decent offers when the new CPU's are on offer because they know they will shift them. I guess all things considering, I have a good deal now and if I were to wait for the T8300, even though the cost of the CPU is technically the same - it would inevitabley more expensive.
Sorry for blabbing on lol. I guess what would be nice to know is some T7500 vs T8300 figures or anyones experience with Penryn, and is the expense over the T7500 going to be worth it (as far as I can see, in my circumstance - probably not).
Let the discussions begin.

Penryn has sse4.1 which gives you about a 30 - 40 percent speed increase in media encoding apps that use sse4.1 over memrom chips.
-
but there are barely any sse4.1 apps out there and by the time we'll see more if these we'll get core 2 quad mobile

Just ordered my T8300... I'll let you know how it is when I receive it.. Estimate is the 18th though :S
-
Look like Dell have given me some extra time to ponder over Penryn...
Email today stating my EDD has changed from the 13th Feb to 3rd of March, despite them assuring me the 13th Feb target was going to be met -
Someone on this forum kindly pm'ed me the wPrime32 score for the T8100 2.1GHZ 3MB Cache and it was 39secs (on a non-tweaked operating system) this is only about 1 second slower than the T7500 which scores 38secs (on a non-tweaked operating system) with its 1MB cache and 100Mhz speed advantage. Your talking about the T8300 which is 2.4Ghz so my guess is it will score between 34-35 seconds in wPrime32, plus it will run cooler, give you more battery life and MIGHT get rid of the cpu whine or lessen it. -
I'd say it is not worth the hassle or money in canceling and ordering all over again. You are already in a queue like me for a 1440x900 panel, this seems to be the part that dell are waiting for here in the UK. I also jumped on the M1530 when them jan sales were on and the 10% discount was a great deal, as you've mentioned now dell have taken away the panel options for the cheaper M1530 configs.
From what i've read the penryn isn't a leap in performance, more like a little step. You won't benefit hugely unless you media encode, extra battery life? Perhaps ~10minutes more? Not huge.
The specs I ordered end of Jan cost £700 (T7250, 8600M GT, 1400x900, 9cell batt) and are now costing over £1K. Its all about best bang for buck, at least with me it is.. I can't see the point of spending +£1k on a laptop that will quickly lose its value in a matter of months. I think you got a very good deal with them Jan sales, its up to you though if you can warrant spending +£300 for a slight increase in CPU performance. -
Yeah, I'm in the same frame as mind as you Trancer.
I'm extremely annoyed with the wait, but even if the Penryns come out tomorrow - the discounts are going to be minimal and to get the same spec (not inc proc), I will be paying a premium for it.
I'm in a half mind to actually buy a T9300 (for £200) then rip the laptop open and get the T7500 out and Ebay it for £80+, I know I would lose the warranty - but I've happily stripped PC's for years. If something is wrong with the laptop it will most likely show up when I start using it rather than a month down the road. -
Sorry, I don't have any answer but a similar question.
I have the same question but for Inspiron 1420. I configured it with T7500 but now Dell is offering T8300 for this laptop.
Any help on which processor would be better? -
Based on reviews (see one here, scroll to benchmarks)of notebooks equipped with the T8100 (2.1Ghz 3mb Cache) that is equal in performance to the T7500, while creating less heat and increasing battery life slightly.
So the T8300 will be faster than the T7500, create less heat and have a longer battery life. -

Any idea where T8100 would fit into this? I am buying my first notebook soon, and i would have to pay about 100$ for the upgrade from T8100 to T8300, is it worth it?
I googled, but wasn't able to find any good comparison charts for mobile CPU's :/
Also, how is T9300/9500 doing in all this?I see that T9300 is about 200$ more than T8100, still worth it?
This is a great offer really, 4gb memory, 320gb HDD, 8600 M GT. Offer runs out in not too long, so i kinda would like to know this. Thanks
BTW. Offer is from zepto.no. -
T8300 is about 10% faster than the T8100.
The T9300 is 20% faster than the T8100 (and T7500) and 10% faster than the T8300.
These figures are based on wPrime32 results which is a CPU benchmarking program.
Hope that helps you decide -
Thanks for a good and quick answer
Think i'll go for the T8100 then. But The T8xxx/9xxx is not supported by Win XP? -
-
Why wouldn't Windows XP work on Penryn CPU's ?
It's not only 64 bit if that's what you're thinking, Vista 32bit runs fine on it (standard on XPS M1530) as does XP 32bit -
I want gaming benchmarks not wPrime32 !
-
Everyone knows processors have a very small impact on gaming frame rates.
Just add a couple fps (if that) to what a T7500 gives you and there's your answer -
So I'll go with T8100 !
