For those of you who have your Mini 9 (XP), what is your virtual memory set at? Mine was set at a static 200mb. I was just wondering what the best setting was as typically I'd set it up as static 1.5-2X the amount of RAM.
I recieved mine last week after placing my order early on Sept. 4th. I am very happy with it so far. I thought that the small screen would be more of an issue but I must say that I am comfortable working off of this than I thought I would be. Still getting used to the keyboard, but it's not that bad.

Hey a note to all. There has been the occasional remark about the 2 lights. One has a power symbol the other has a battery symbol. Here is a rundown of what they do
Power Light On:
Computer is on
Computer is off/Hibernating AND battery is charging
Power Light Off:
Computer is off/Hibernating and us unplugged
Computer is off/Hibernating but plugged in and battery is fully charged
Battery Light:
Flashes orange when the batter gets below 10%
To my knowledge, that is the only time the battery light comes on... -
Yeps, I already said I like it....Can't wait to see your pics!
I like this cuz it's truly *girly*....wish there were more colors/designs..that would make this really sassy!

Don't think so. Vista Ultimate SP1 (Dell Version) installs in about 30min from clean boot on my I910 w/1G RAM...
Ended up disabling the hibernation file and turning pagefile off to preserve space since I'm using 4GB SD for ReadyBoost. Sitting at @3GB free with all apps installed now...

Ok, here's a question for anyone that has the mini already....
did you buy the CD/DVD drive from Dell? Mine arrived today, but I don't have the mini yet to test it out.
The CD/DVD drive has the usb cable that splits so that you can power the drive from the mini, and not need a power cord plugged into the wall. I really like this feature, but what I'm wondering is, do you need both plugged in to power it or can it run off one usb port? It also comes with a single usb cable. I'm hoping that I can just use that one and run it off one port. -
Both options are possible. I know the LG external drive can operate on one or two depending on the speed you want the drive to go at.
-
Here's a pic to compare the size of the Mini to my 1720. I couldn't help myself and replaced the XP sticker with a Vista one today.

Europe now has a Ubuntu version !!!!!
Also billybanana, Im making a Dell Mini Gallery over at http://mydellmini.com/gallery.html , mind if I add your picture?

BB,
The pic's look really good!
Thanks for adding them here on NBR's forum and in this thread!

Wow...Dell not even in the Top 10....
They need to release the 12" fairly quick...
Thanks for the linky, Burkle!

It looks the 1720's baby or it's kid brother/sister
Your welcome
The Acer still looks mighty tempting (possible bday present)
But I'll wait for the 12" Dell Mini. I saw the Asus 900 as Bestbuy and it sooo tiny. Going from hi-res 17" to a 8.9" is going to take a huge adjustment
-
Yes, the Acer does...I'm still holding on for *red* in the I9, however..if the 12" is released in *Red*, or *Tangerine Orange* I'm so on it!
Aahhhh..patience..patience..patience

Because only Dell sell Dells.....
-
Thanks! for advising
....It still would've been nice to see the Dell in some Top 10..somewhere for the I9
Cin. -
OK, 'splain me this.
How does 12" qualify as a "netbook," as compared (say) to a light 13" laptop? I'm looking at all the players in this segment and I can't even bite on the 10" Asus - it's just (a little) too big to make the cost and trade-offs worthwhile - for that size I'll just take my M1330 XPS, thanks! The 9" is enough smaller to really make the trade-offs worthwhile. That's obviously IMHO, YMMV, etc.
-
For me, it would be weight. I know the XPS is already pretty light, but the Mini 12 is supposed to be 2.5 lbs compared to 4 lbs for the M1330. And it's supposed to be thinner as well.
I think it would quality as a netbook since the rest of the specs will be pretty low. Atom + small HDD/SSD. Hopefully the price will be close to netbook prices. I know the M1330 can get up there even though I got mine on a great deal.
-
Netbooks aren't full featured notebooks. Since it will run on Atom and be lightweight it will be called a netbook.
-
I ordered Sept 18th and have an ESD of 10/2, if that changes I may cancel and have to look for another Netbook.
-
I ordered on 9/18 and the ESD is 10/6... bummer if it is delayed... no word yet on any changes for my order but who knows...
@Jokkon - what config options did you order from dell.ca? -
Ordered 9/13, ESD 9/29. It's still in build so I don't think I'm getting it on the 29th. With a Mac event now under 3 weeks away (Dell's return policy) and the Lenovo's now taking orders, and a possible holiday price war I don't mind waiting.
I'm not going to cancel, they gave me next day air for $8 and I got in on the -$25 black deal, but I wouldn't mind a 30 day delay at this point. -
I notice that the icons I put on the desktop do not stay where they are where I put them. This happens everytime I shut down and load the i9 up. Anyone know how to fix this?
Example: I have the my computer and outlook express icons on the top left. Everytime I reboot, they are shuffled to the bottem and the recycle bin goes to the top. -
According to user Robby818 in post #830:
I found a fix. Set the icon view on the desktop to auto arrange. The recycle bin icon may not be in the place you prefer, but at least it won't jump around on every start up. -
Not to mention the new competition from Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens amd the one that really interests me: Samsung. Hopefully this will drive down prices more. They are all pretty similar, but the Fujitsu lets you decorate the cover how you like and the Samsung oozes quality. 'fraid it's likely to be pricey
-
OK, thanks to both of you - I wasn't focused on the weight question. To me, the primary factor in netbook-ness is size, but you are making a very good point. If you can get a more usable screen and keyboard and still keep it under 2.5 pounds or so, that's great (maybe better).
-
I actually prefer the small size and profile. I have a 12 inch laptop (its NOT anywhere near 2.5 lbs) and it is ok, but for classes and going around the mini's size is so great and perfect. I would not want a 12 inch netbook..
-
Thats nice for the 2.5 pounds on the I12...looking forward to seeing it, upon release!

So the I12 is coming out?

Although it seems like there's a lot of delays, I'm getting mine much sooner than expected. Maybe you guys can hope for the same luck. I ordered on 9/17 with ESD 10/7. However the status just changed to shipped as of today, with estimated delivery being tomorrow 9/26. I understand there's supposed to be a parts shortage, but as it didn't really affect my order maybe it won't mess with yours either. On another note, I ordered this neoprene sleeve for it:
http://www.amazon.com/Neoprene-Slee...bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1222387420&sr=8-2
and this sdhc
http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-8GB...ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1222387389&sr=8-1
Sorry this is probably a dumb question but will that sdhc work with the dell mini okay? And can I just leave it in or do I have to remove it before booting and stuff like that? -
Eyun,
What configuration did you order? -
I have that case and SDHC card. The SDHC is compatible and you do not need to take it out unless you want to put another one in.
The case is well made. It's not technically made for the Mini, as it is an eee PC 901 case. It works well though. -
That'll be just fine and no you don't have to take it out to boot. You can leave it in all the time.
-
Thanks for the answers. As for configuration I got the black one with Windows XP, 1 gb memory, 16gb ssd, 1.3 camera and no bluetooth.
-
I decided to cancel mine because it is a October send out as well as mine
has bluetooth and qvc one took it off. Just fyi for everybody.
Jane -
thanks for the advice on arranging the icons. It seems like the recycle bin likes to constantly stay at the top left. Where I like my MY COMPUTER icon lol. Geez, I never had this problem on windows heh
-
I think I posted but they are pending cancellation on my qvc order. I wanted the blue tooth so I'm going to keep the one I have now, even though I paid
25.00 for the white which doesn't exist now.
Can't wait for the 10 and 12 to come along. -
Seems like you would be happier with more of a work horse.
I mainly like just the netbook feature so I can relist during the day on ebay at my desk. -
How can i check whether i`ve got a bluetooth chip or not?
Edit:
also, which is better (speed/performance wise) 8gb vs 16gb vs 32gb sdhc? -
Love my 1210 and 1330 xps.. but this is so different.. and will be way easier to carry to work. -
Wow..cancellation! Oh NO! ....
I don't think it will be a long wait for the I12....
(hopefully)

Does anyone have any idea about the Atom Processor the mini is running on. I heard that its basically designed to power mobile phones, will it able to handle a netbook efficiently?
-
Has anyone noticed the slot that is behind the battery? It almost looks like another SD Slot or something. can anyone confirm what that is?
-
I had a question for anybody who can help. Can the standard wan card
go in the mini. I took my sprint card out and it doesn't seem to work?
Oh dear... any help would be appreciated. -
My objective is to have a real small music server using an external USB HD powered off the Mini. So I am not real jumpy toward the new carrot that is on the block.
Is this the second in a long line of re-modelled Dells? With many more to come?
History with me and the mini:
Ordered from QVC first.
Cancelled QVC order when I found that I could get Bluetooth and case for about the same price going via employee discount page at work.
Received case and awaiting order from Dell.
Ordered Sept 19 with ship date of 10/13
Black,
1.3m pixel camera
Bluetooth
1 g memory
16 g SSD
WinXP
Three year warranty, mail-in.
Hoping to find the Dell Ubuntu ISO some time in future.
Will get at least 16GB memory card and update main memory to 2 gigs.
Already own two Western Digital USB Passport HD with 160 gb or 320 gb volumes.

Yeah, it's a SIM card slot for the WWAN adapter. However, user fknelite tested this with the following results:
Here's a pic from the Service Manual. -
No question about the I9 there. My question was about the I12. To me, size and weight both matter. Other folks are more concerned with weight than size. DSFDF.
