I have an inspiron 1520 and just yesterday the dvd/cd rom stopped working. It won't recognize any cd/dvd's that I insert. i have tried to update the driver and i have also unistalled and reinstalled it but nothing seems to be working. Does any one have any ideas what can be done to fix this? Thanks for your help!

    Is this notebook under warranty?

It sounds like a faulty optical drive. But before replacing anything, i'd do a quick system restore just to make sure it's not software related. If it's under warranty, you could ask Dell to replace your optical drive. If not, you can purchase the same drives for ~$40 on ebay.

Well I asked about the warranty because these drives suck.

A dirty laser lens could also be a cause. I had an old laptop's DVD drive quit on me after not using it for 6 months. I opened the tray and used the "can of air" to blow all the dust off. The drive worked fine after that.

You could try a CD/DVD lens cleaner disc to see.

To rule out a Windows error, try to boot with a bootable CD/DVD
