I ordered two inspiron 1521, one yellow, one red for my daughters for college on July 28. When I called, they said with the delay on color, they would ship by the 17th.

After reading about all the delays on here, I called today and asked if I might be delayed. They said the notebooks were in the build stage but there was a delay due to the color choice. The person I was talking to said it will probably ship by the 17th even with the delay.

My kids are getting on a plane the 22 to head for school. For those who have ordered from Dell, what do you think?

    Thanks for any input.

Are you asking whether or not we think your daughters will get the computers until they leave for college?

If so, it is possible. You haven't had a delay yet, so I have no reason to think you will get one.

    I'd look into other options.

8/17 is a Friday. If they ship it on that day, you will get it Monday at the earliest even with next-day shipping, although you could try to upgrade to Saturday delivery (possibly for a price ) if they allow that option.

You will have anywhere from 1-4 days to reinstall everything, get rid of all the junk Dell puts on it, and make everything work again - and that's just on the software side of things.

This scenario depends on these assumptions:
    1. Dell won't delay your order.
    2. Dell won't mess up somewhere. (see #1)
    3. Your carrier won't get delayed somewhere (it could happen - they insure and guaranty against this, but that doesn't help if you need your laptop by a certain time).
    4. There are no hardware issues upon arrival that would need repair or replacement.
    5. There are no problems reinstalling Windows and all the drivers.

As you can see, there are an awful lot of assumptions there.

On the other hand, a miracle could happen and those laptops could ship ahead of schedule too.

It's up to you if you want to take that chance.

I honestly don't think your daughters are going to get their comps before they leave for school :( I ordered mine 7/14, in which it should have been shipped today 8/3... they have delayed it and now my ESD is 8/28. My specs are in my sig... I as well am going back to school and was hoping to have it before 8/20 but looks like thats not going to happen anymore. GOOD LUCK! I do hope they can get theres sooner!!

I guess I can believe them, since their estimated ship date of September 5th is already ridiculously long and fits with what other users are saying.
