Gurra I had the same problem. I found this solution:

Go to the control panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Sound --> Double Click on Spearks/Heaphones icon (Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC Working) ---> Enhancement Tab ---> Check the box labeled "disable all enhancements".

This should fix your problem. I noticed that there are still some odd pops and stutters, but I believe that this is a driver issue. This fix should producer a much cleaner sound.

Note: I suggest everyone with a D630 use this fix in order to improve on the sound quality.

i always tho the enhancement is for high definition audio and codecs that set for high fidelity PC audio. and you get better sound quality when it is turned off? ouch ouch!!! maybe i need to play around with it...

There's only one speaker in the D630. I doubt there is much you can do to improve the sound quality.

It is true that there is only one speaker, however, if you plug in speakers or a headphone the difference before the fix and after the fix is night and day.

There is something you can do to greatly improve the sound quality. You can plug in external speakers or earphones.

The sound is bad with earphones... After i disabled all effects in vista its better. But still not up to normal standard. Seems that vista sound driver is corrupt in some way

I played around with my speakers yesterday; of course I didn’t use any external speakers. Yeah, I do agree the sound quality is crappy. But once I plug in my headphone, it is decent I can live with it.

Hmm, this will be an issue for me. Do you think it's a Vista problem or a D630 problem?

I'm deciding between D630 and m1330... this may be an issue.

I believe it is a driver issue in Vista with this audio hardware. If they use the same audio chip in the m1330 I am sure you will get the same problem. I actually got the fix from the dell support website and they were talking about the Inspiron line.

you are buying D630 to play music files on it? go for xps if you want it for that purpose.

You think the sound difference between XPS and D630 will be that significant? I figured on a laptop both drivers would be pretty similar...

With XPS you are able to get Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy, and in any ways it is better than what we got in D630. and i dont even know wth they use for sounds card in our D630, personal it doesn't matter to me since that's not my purpose buy purchasing it.

You could always get a USB or PCMCIA sound device if you wanted to. That should make the sound at least as good as the XPS internal stuff... or better depending on what you get.

This is a slight correction on LeeC81's post. The Sound Blaster Auidgy is NOT a hardware intergrated sound chip. It is actually just software that runs over the intergrated sound chip that is in every Dell system (SigmaTel). This is what it says exactly on their website:

"Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition"

Notice the "Software Edition" portion of it. It is a bit misleading by placing "Intergrated" infront but a quick Google will immediately show you that it is in fact just software related.

I do not have personal experience with the software, but I believe (according to the net) it does improve the sound a bit.

Here is a Wikipedia link also: Wikipedia

So it doesn't seem like the minimal benefit in sound of XPS over Latitude would be a reason to buy the XPS, right? I would have another business style laptop for my job, so this would be my personal system. However, I think that the design of the latitude would make it a better candidate than the inspiron, and I like the extra screen over the 13.3" xps.

However, the inspiron 1420 is still under consideration.......

How do you think the sound in the m1330 and the e1420 with the audigy sound option would compare to the d630?

The new Vista driver model (to tighten down DRM) has made some host audio solutions perform badly. It is a software issue. I have the same problem on the ThinkPad Z60t.
