Hey I hope this thread isn't stepping on any other threads toes, so I apologize upfront if it is. I like my laptops to last, something like 2 to 3 years and it would seem that nowadays they have become more and more upgradeable. What is the upgrade potential of the 1420? I have a few upfront questions:

    1) Can the cpu be upgraded to a quad core or even the upcoming extreme mobile chips?

    2) Can the discrete nvida 8400 card be upgraded in the future with a different card?

    3) Could I install Blue-Ray DVD in the future?

    Thanks!

    1) Can the cpu be upgraded to a quad core or even the upcoming extreme mobile chips?

Probably not, unless the thermals were brought WAY down. It would also most likely require BIOS support as well, so pray that Dell actually would do it even if possible.

    2) Can the discrete nvida 8400 card be upgraded in the future with a different card?

It is a possibility, especially if the 1420 were some day updated to include other options during the build-to-order pages. You can only get the cards from Dell, so the GPU would have to be offered for the 1420.

However, there is some speculation that the modular card has the same design as the 1520 and 1720 designs...meaning the 1420 might support a 8600GT (assuming heat does not kill). We don't know yet because no one has tried yet.

    3) Could I install Blue-Ray DVD in the future?

Optical drives are fairly easily to replace/upgrade...so it is a possibility.

Thanks. I have heard that the nvidia cards are pretty easy to overclock, is that true? If so where is a good place to go for instructions?

Assuming the heat could be controlled, can a quad core be installed on a core duo motherboard? Do they not have different sockets and pins?
