    I think it's a processor/ACPI thing that affects all kinds of notebooks. It is also a matter of how sensitive your hearing is.

    I don't know but my inspiron 6400 is incredibly quiet :)

    My HP NC8430 is very quiet.
    Especially after using NHC to regualte the CPU voltage and fanspeeds.
    The loudest thing is the HD.

    ive heard a similar whining sound from a compaq.its not a constant sound it stops and starts...im guessing it happens when the cooling fans run ......could be wrong though.could some explain what exactly it is ?
