Ok so...talk has already started regarding the *upcoming* Dell Inspiron 12..

So I thought a thread dedicated to the I12 would be appropriate now!!!!

As it's not *officially* released yet....Let's roll with a thread with questions, suggestion, applicable links, etc....

Are you ready to roll with the Inspiron 12?????

    :spinny:

You should post the link to the Tesco site that had info on the 12.

Would this still be considered a netbook? Or better question what determines what should be considered a netbook? No CD Drive, Less than 10 inches, Atom or similar processor.

I would guess these are still netbooks because they are Atom based and really no frills sort of notebooks.

This release, is also going to be an interesting one...Hopefully, it is better than how the I9 was released..and Dell has learned from *trial and error*... ;) :)

I would also wish for this one to have more colors, other than B & W...

lol, I am not entirely sure they have made any yet. My ETA keeps getting pushed back. I ordered on 8/20 and it is sometime in November now. I am just going to cancel eventually.

Yea, I actually like the Ideapad looks and design. It will be good to see what it looks like once it actually comes out and someone does a good review of it. I will prolly wait till both come out and compare the two.

I like the design of the 12 I just think that the functionality of it will be low. Unless you only plan to do web browsing I'd rather have the much more powerful Sony Z series and just add the extra pound. If the pricing of dell's latitude 12 inch is going to be similar to the inpsiron 12 inch (they seem similarly specced if I remember right) then I'll add the extra pound of half a pound the sony Z series is (especially considering it's only 3.4 lbs or something) and get the double/tripple performance boost.

The Sony Z starts at $1800, these two notebooks aren't in the same category. It is a netbook with a larger screen.

    Hi there,

I noticed that "Z530" is the name of the new processor, and Tesco probably messed it up (the quoted weight is SO suspicious...). I guess that "Inspiron 12" is not the official name either.

Do you happen to know if there´s an official name for this model?

Why couldn't it be Inspiron 12? The Mini is the Inspiron 9.

I don´t know much about Dell computers, so I wasn´t implying that it "couldn´t be". It´s just that I googled that name and this post is pretty much the only "reliable" place it´s named like that.

There are many more entries using "Z530", but still, I don´t think that´s the official name, that´s just the processor and Tesco´s lousy "product placement".

What do you call a big Mini? A Midi perhaps, but it doesn't sound like good branding :D :D

Tesco actually call their I9 the 'N270': http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-8967.aspx so I wouldn't read too much into the name. It'd be cool if they put them up for sale in their stores.

I've always liked the idea of a small laptop, but never been able to justify the high purchase price. That's why I'm looking at netbooks that are available for a fraction of the price. Now if Sony et al drop the price of their proper 11/12" laptops to say 50% more than a netbook I'll be first in the queue.... I'm not holding my breath though.

So if Tesco called the I9 the N270...I would only imagine that Dell would perhaps, call it the I12 ;) Well, that's just my logic..we will have to wait on Dell for the final details ;) :)

I wonder what the pricing will be for the 12 inch. I'm guessing somewhere around 350 to 650 depending on the specs.

Tesco say they will sell their 12" model in the UK for exactly the same price as a top of the line 16gig I9 with bluetooth and the upgraded camera: $534 or $494 with $40 instant savings.

The pricing will have to take into account the Inspiron 1318 as well as the smaller Mini.

hee!hee! I sure am...I have been waiting for the netbooks to come out...I'm just being *picky* about which one I really want...And, one should be whenever they put money into something! ;) :)

It's great this is the one you been waiting for..now it just has to be released!

I was wondering the same thing...I can't imagine it being anything over the top, for the price points!!! :)

So, NanK...do you think the final pricing will be a bit more than the I9...(depending on final specs, of course) ;)

I personally think the dell one wasn't that much better and was basically like all the other netbooks out. It's just easier to order a dell than an asus PC since you can go straight to dell.com while with asus you gotta find a reseller.

Cin, Inspiron 12 should be more expensive than the 9. I would assume the monitor would cost more but I dunno. If the Inspiron 12 can pull of the same batterylife as the 9 but with a slimmer figure (even if it's around the same weight as long as it looks nicer) than I think it would be a quite a success.

Yeah, I do think it may cost more...I would love too, once it comes out to handle either one at a local B&M..but I think that is a bit down the road yet!

Pricing? I wouldn't have thought it would cost any more to make. Size apart look how much more you get in a 15.4" laptop for not much more money. I reckon each model will cost a little more than the equivalent I9 and thay'll adjust the specs to get their profit level right. Dell are masters at picking pricing levels, sometimes it works in our favour, sometimes not ;)

I think most people would choose the size that suited them best as longs as the prices are reasonable.

There's a massive benefit in all this that doesn't seem to have been noticed. 11-13" laptops that were prohibively expensive a while ago have fallen a lot in price and are now affordable. :D

Hey, Nan..I'm just waiting to see the factual pricing..and yes..maybe it wont cost much more!! And, agreed it all depends on exactly what size * price points that each individual wants (along w/specs..of course).

    Oh yeah..Dell is a master at the price points...for sure! : )

I just saw a Samsung Q45 available for £469. OK, it's half as heavy again as the Mini 12 but you get an excellent fully featured 12" notebook for a very reasonable price. It wouldn't be for everyone, but I'd hope it'd stop Dell selling the Mini 12 for too much money.

Tesco still say they will sell a linux version from week commencing 06/10. Dates have a tendency to slip, but if they already know that they won't be able to make the date, I'd have thought they'd have changed their website.

I've been waiting for the details to change, especially now it's almost October, but they don't so Tesco are happy for them to be there as they are. I'd have thought some other retailer would be offering the 12 by now if the date is correct.

Did you notice the pictures on the Z530 page are actually of the Mini I9?

Yes, but wouldn't Dell have to officially release it themselves before there was any availability anywhere else?

I was just looking at those pic's vs. the slides (of pics) that were also provided.........hmmm..  ..If that's true, than they really need to update their site to what is *factual* ;)

All I can say is, I will totally buy one now that I've seen that they did not use that awful-looking studio hinge on these things.

I'm waiting to order a Mini9 until they're more readily available--but if these I12s come with a built in optical drive (thus saving the $85 additional for one) then I'd spring for one of those instead.

However, it's driving me nuts that dell is making cute computers, because everyone I know despises dell and is making fun of me for wanting one :(

The I12 doesn't have a built-in optical drive, just a hard drive option. Unless the specs have changed from the earlier leaked docs.

Good point. But Dell don't release official details until just be before the product is released, don't they? Yet they haven't asked Tesco to remove the pages...

    Hey there,
    The I12 has been rumored 9/30...but per Tescos's site a 10/6.

I think right now, it just has to be a *wait and see*!!! ;)

But knowing Dell, it could be on those date, in between, or at a later date.

There is a thread set up for the I12 and I will link it for you.

If you search for it on Tesco's site though, under "web browsers" (which is what they seem to call netbooks... why don't they just *use the name everyone else is using*) it's not there, nor if you search for Dell, either. So they've hidden it from idle browsers and people not in the know.

Tesco are also pretty bad at publishing accurate specs- the webcam and bluetooth aren't mentioned at all for the Mini 9 and yet I'm pretty sure they're selling the same Linux Mini 9 that Dell are selling on their own site, and that does have a webcam and bluetooth.

i dont like the size of 12 inch, the screen and keyboard is too small for most adults, 13" is more bearable.
    i had owned 2 dell 700m, 1 dell latitude d420, but now i only use 16''+.

Cin, the pictures are from engadget:

To each there own. I believe most 12" widescreen laptops have full sized keyboards. And really, if you need portability, a 16"+ laptop just doesn't cut it.
