Post pictures of your grainy screens, so users can compare and test to see if they need a replacement or return.

Good thread, but I doubt it would help.

If you do post, please leave the manufacturer's name too.

I tried taking pictures of mine before I returned but no picture could capture how bad it really was. All I can say is, the difference in the LG screen I received is unbelievable. It was definitely worth returning it and waiting for a new one to arrive.

I assume you had the AUO screen? What control did you have over selecting an LG screen in your replacement?

I gather that the AUO is the less desirable screen, and that the Samsung and LG screens are the more desirable (I have the Samsung/SEC WSXGA+ Screen)

My SEC screen is nice, with the exception of some light leakage, and the vertical viewing angle doesnt seem to be as amazing as it should be (considering it is suposed to be fully 45 degrees more than the WXGA screen) Im just very glad I didnt get the WXGA screen.

The glossy coating looks as good or better than any of the laptops that Ive seen in places like Circuit city (Better or equal to all the HPs, Toshibas, Sonys, Acers, and Fujitsus that they sell there) - so the 'grainess', or the normal glossy coating, is not distracting or bad in any way.

This thread won't be of much use, its is impossible or extremely difficult to take a picture to show graininess, it just looks like a normal LCD screen when you take a picture.

No. My first system with the SEC panel had absolutely no sparkle or grain that I could notice. My replacement with the AUO had sparkle/vasoline looking display that I noticed from across the room. Day and night difference.

Don't get confused about people saying the grainy screens are normal and that people are overreacting etc.. I promise you that there can be major differences with the displays that Dell is shipping out. From my understanding, the SEC is a new comer into the 14" wxga + market. Before the SEC, yes you can say that it was more of a normal thing for grainy hi res 14" displays. At least that is what one poster reported to me. I believe the SEC wxga + 14" panels have only been around a few months now.

When you get to Generic PnP Monitor, right click on it and select Properties. From there, select the Details tab, and then click the drop-down menu and select Hardware Ids. After "MONITOR\" you should see the code for your screen manufacturer. Then come back to this site and search for it.

I just did a google on Dells grainy screen and wow.. Reports are coming in from everywhere. Whats interesting are those that are familiar with the older version 1505 etc.. and say the problem got much worse when Dell recently retooled with this new line. Is there anything to that? Does anyone have an older 1505 etc.. that can elaborate if the screens took a turn for the worse?

The screen manufacturer doesn't mean much. My SEC had equal graininess.

Dell is planning to get out of this Computer Business(& thinking about selling hot cakes) hence this 'grand effort' of churning out bad quality stuff to customers :)

Maybe it is the OEMs who make the screen. Apple has been hit with this plague.

    http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/004437.html

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/apple-macbook-macbook-pro-screens-subject-of-class-action-lawsu/

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=251352

That last thread has a picture of the simulated noise, which I'd have to say is pretty accurate, he added "1% Noise to it (Gaussian and Monochromatic)" if you read the first post.

What I'd like to know is....do non grainy displays exist?

Just a hunch...I think that the issue there is from having to dither the displays to make up for the LCD panels not displaying millions of colors, but rather hundreds of thousands. The new dells also use the same kind of screen, with hundreds of colors (as said in the specs).

The problem could be caused by that, or the glossy coating. Probably the best way to figure out in general if you have grain is to scroll a web page while looking at the white areas to see if the grain moves along with the web page.

Also, if the grain changes like static, then it might be dithering (because coating doesn't move)

My grain doesn't move, I do think it is the coating, it is starting to bother me more and more lately :( It feels kinda stressful using it sometimes. In games or movies it looks wonderful, it only bothers me when there is white...word or webpages.

I have a LG-PHILIPS LP171WU1 (LPLE400). It was nice when I first receieved my 1720. This is my first laptop and I dont have much to compare it to. The grain is pretty heavy though (like a fine layer of sand) and I have recently found a dead pixel on the left lower corner. I have a replacement sitting right under my desk. I'm hoping its much better, and that I just recieved a bad LG-Philips lcd screen to begin with. The replacement btw is LP171WU1 (LPLE400) again.

    Yeah sure.

    1) Ask yourself, does the screen look good to you.

If Ans = Yes, then you keep it.
If Ans = No, then you do whatever you want to. (return, exchange) or still keep it.

    hope that helps.

When you open the package look to see what manufacturer made the screen. It will also list the model #. Research on google to see if its any good. And also compare specs for both of the screens (the one you have now and the one you recieve in the mail).

Just my own question, why did you have to have your screen replaced?

Dell guy just replaced mine 25 minutes ago : )

i had the grainy screen on my dell xps m140 and honestly, it didn't bother me. i wouldn't have even noticed it if it weren't for this forum.

to those who don't know: it kinda looks like a bunch of little sparklies or fine shiny "dust" on the screen. i wasn't bothered by it at all, but you can definitely notice it if 1) you've got something to compare it to, 2) you're anal as heck or 3) someone points it out.

like i said, i had it and i didn't mind it one bit.

i now have a dell 1420 with the matte screen and there's no problem at all. maybe people should opt for the matte screen. ;)

    Curious:

How do you tell you have an AUO screen? Does Dell mark it on the invoice?

Also, can you tell Dell NOT to make your laptop with an AUO screen?
