    Hello,

I have spent countless hours searching this thread and I have yet to find a 'one stop shopping' thread on how to install windows XP only (i.e. no dual boot) for a Dell 1720 laptop. Would someone be able to assist, it would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Key issues that I'm finding are:
    1. Dell Media 3.3 does not seem to work, need version 3.0
    2. Dell Media key when pressed on XP only system may crash.

So can someone please help once and for all and we'll put this issue to rest. I've seen various threads on how to do dual boot but nothing complete, step by step for XP Only.

    Thanks,
    Ravy

Backup your existing data. Reset your BIOS configuration settings to factory defaults. Reboot with the XP installation disc. Delete all partitions and create one or two primary partitions, format them and install XP on one of them. Once installed, boot and install service packs, updates, drivers, utilities and required applications!

After backing up your data - but before you install XP, you will have to prepare the drive with the MediaDirect Reinstall CD.

Check the threads in forums concerning the Vostro and Inspiron laptops with MediaDirect buttons.
