The blacklight bleed on my 1400 is insane *PICS*

I've always noticed the black light bleeding and it seemed a little worse than average, but tonight was the first time I used my 1400 in a dim lit room and I noticed how bad the bottom half of the screen looked washed out, while only the top was nice and black.

Granted the camera exaggerates the bleeding, but the pics do a good job of showing how bad the bottom half is bleeding out the ass.

First thing Monday I am requesting a return. Too bad, the rest of the Vostro is great.

    That is certainly horrible.

What screen do you have, and can you find out who made it?

Go to your device manager and expand the 'Monitor' tree in there. You'll see an entry called 'Plug and Play Monitor'. Double click that and go to the 'Details' tab, and you'll be able to display a few details about your hardware. Be sure to select 'Device Instance Id' and give us the code that shows up.

If you see one of these you have the corresponding LCD:
    LPL => LG Electronis
    SEC => Samsung

There are other codes, but I'm not 100% sure what they are.

The only way to return your laptop is to call them.

Is there a manufacturer whose screens are more prone to light bleeding?

You can also log onto the Dell premier website and put your service tag and they will give you the parts they used to make the laptop.

LG is supposed to be the best. Mine is CHO.

    Not going for a replacement.

I am returning mine for a refund. I don't really need a laptop right now and I only bought it, because it was a decent deal.

I can wait until Montevina and Penryn to buy a M1330. Hopefully they'll have all the quirks worked out by then.

That's actually the worst backlight bleeding I've ever seen. Even in a lit room, you can see is extremely clearly.

How do you get the screen all black to see backlit bleed?
Is it during booting or some other mode where you can easily look for it?

sure.. take them in a dark room no lights on.. set your screen saver to "blank" and click preview. this should help and try to take them straight on not at a angle.. look straight as if you were working on it sorta..

Ok let me know what you think...

The pics with my reflection were taken with the lights on
the ones without my reflection were taken with the light off.

Don't mind the white "dot" on the left side, that was the mouse pointer.

looks similar maybe even a bit better than what my 1500 looks like.. what display do you have?? go to device manager--monitor--doubleclick... then details... then pull down list and click hardware id it should give you the brand code for the monitor..its seemingly like they are all like this unless someone tells us otherwise.. sucks if you ask me. i just checked one of our business toshiba's we paid only 450 for and it has WAY less bleed than this does

I know man :( , but is it really that bad? I mean i played games like AA and it doesn't really bother me. also while browsing the web and using office applications. What sucks is when I'm viewing it from an angle.

yeah the only time mine is noticable is when the screen is darker or im watching a dvd or when booting up etc.. there really shouldnt be ANY LEAKAGE IMO.. but a very very minor amount i could accept what ours TO ME appears like is a lot of leakage. i was not expecting this when i ordered this laptop..

but if it doesnt bother you then i would not worry about it.. it bugs the heck out of me

i guess i until i see conclusive pics of another 1400 with a better looking screen , then it will totally start bothering me to the point of calling dell. I hope someone posts theirs up before the 30 day return runs out.

What's odd is that on this Jasons review he states the following:

"The viewing angles on the Vostro 1400 are good from left to right. But if you look from the top, the screen looks dark and it is hard to make out anything. The backlight is very bright"

Because when I look from the top, the screen looks very light(bright)!. It's the total opposite of what he is saying.

    hey,

I just got my Vostro 1500. I also seem to have a blacklight bleed just like yours, cell323. I'll post some picts later. How do I check where my LCD display was made? I tried zfactor's instructions, but I can't find the system device manager. Some help?

    Thanks

    If you are on Vista...

1.) Right click Computer and select Properties
2.) Select Device Manager on the left side of the screen
3.) Click the + sign next to monitors
4.) Right click on the monitor that follows and select properties
5.) Go to details and select hardware IDs

I got to the monitor pull down list, but I can't find hardware id. The monitor pull down list only has "Default Monitor", "Default Monitor", and "Plug and Play Monitor"

I hope you post the pics up soon. In XP I think you have to go to device manager. Click on Monitor, there should be a tab where you should be able to find hardware id info.

I have a 1400 and my light leakage is very minimal. It's low enough that at night in a dark room I don't notice it at all unless the screen is completely black. The leakage is on par with my family's iBook, maybe even a bit better. My screen is a CMO (Chi Mei Optoelectronics).
