I also have CMO on my 1400. Due to finals have not played with it much. Will check leakage on mine in couple of days

Maybe we can figure out if there are any better screens over others
Current choices are CMO, AUO, LG and Samsung.

Seems 1500 are worse in terms of bleed.

    Hi everyone

I recently recieved a new inspiron 1420 (LG electronics screen), glossy (with truelife). Moment I turned it on i noticed light leakage from the bottom of the screen. I've added a photo (in a darkened) room from my camera. It obviously looks worse than it is but it bugs me out big time. I'm considering sending it back.

I can very obviously notice it when the screen is black and or darkened. Only time I cannot notice it is when it is a completely white screen. All other colours tend to look a little lighter towards the bottom.

Prior to this I had an inspiron 8600 which also had light leakage, although minimal compared to this and very tolerable compared.

I have this light leakage problem on my 1400 and I noted it in the review I did. Screen is a LPL0000 (LG). I gotta say that the top 2/3 of the screen is incredible and has some of the best color I have seen on a LCD display and the TrueLife makes everything "pop" with the Digital Vibrance Control set to 33% in the Nvidia control panel.

The bottom edge of the LCD is just washed out when looking at dark colors. In some thing, like web surfing, office work, and certain games it is not even visible unless you are looking for it.

On the other hand, I play a lot of WoW and the button bars are washed out at all viewable angles. If I tilt the screen back so that the the bottom is not washed out, the top of the display is too dark to be usable. I was going to exchange the laptop however my wife has snatched it away from me and refuses to give it up now.

    I ordered a Lenovo T61 as a solution.

I'm thinking you got it much worse in the top corners than mine! I didn't know i had any leakage in the corners till i took my photo!!! As for the bottom, it makes me sick looking at it, just like with mine :( It's nasty :(
I know exactly what you are talking about :( That is what has made me most annoyed.

I would not worry about the corners too much. Almost all LCDs will display some level of light leakage around the edges that is not noticeable in actually use. I have a Samsung 19 inch I use for my desktop that shows some leakage in a dark room, however once you use the monitor, you would never see it.

The light leakage from the bottom of some 1400 screens is significant and noticeable in normal use. That is a much different problem than normal LCD leakage. Chances are, if someone has to setup the LCD in a dark room to see the problem, their LCD is just fine.

And yeah the Warcraft thing really kills me. I do mostly work on my laptop, however when I want to sit down and play WoW, I just can not do it without noticing the bottom of the screen.

Wow, I thought my new Sony SZ6 was bad, but it's nothing compared to that Dell. That's awful.

Is Dell taking care of this or....

As to being on ALL LCDs. That's BS. I have 4x 20" LCDs, 3x 24" LCDs a Dell 4150 and have been around a wide variety of other laptops and LCD displays, none of mine have any light leakage (other than the new Sony which will be repaired) only the defective ones have light leakage.

Well, I was planning to exchange the whole laptop, since I am really happy with it other than the screen. Instead of dealing with any of that, my wife is just keeping it for herself and I am trying something else.

Yeah, mainly work here too. But I like my WoW also :p Glad your wife likes it though.

As you mentioned, whenever I tilt my screen so the bottom is not washed out, the top is too dark and I can't see very well at all.

Meh, I have had probably 8 LCDs and each one had a small degree of light leakage visible with a black screen in a dark room and the brightness up usually (I always have the brightness up). Unless the entire LCD is pitch black to the point where it is invisible in a dark room, it is light leakage to me.

Probably none of those LCDs are cheap TN panels. Probably VA and/or IPS panels. But with dell vostro you get a TN panel. I've seen only at Lenovo the option for IPS panel, they call it FlexView.

I have a vostro 1500. My bleed is only about 1 inch on the bottom and maybe 1/2 on the top....very minimal. Never even knew I had any until i read this forum. Glad I got lucky.

    For XP:

start -> control panel -> double click on "system" -> select "hardware" tab
-> click "device manager" -> expand "monitors" -> double click "plug and play monitor" -> select "details" tab -> select "device instance id" from drop-down menu

    example: DISPLAY\ LPL0000\5&1F4CACE6&0&00000118&01&00

I just shipped it back to Dell for a refund.

No point getting another one when there is a high chance the next one will have just as bad bleeding.

This kind of thing is the reason I paid $39 for 1yr next day business on site hardware. Beats 3-5 days mailing out, then 3-5 days back. Dell's are great bang for the buck, when the bang doesn't fizzle.

I've just been on the phone with dell here in NZ. They are going to send out a replacement screen to be installed (however this time "non" glossy). Will see how that goes.

i dont get it why are they sending all of you just a screen?? i told them no way they are opening up a brand new unit.. send me a whole new one.. they are no problems.. and they gauranteed a new unit not a refurb..personally at this point i dont think anyone will get a perfect screen it seems they all have this effect either a ton of it or just a small amount..

i went to office depot today to look at the ones there (my freind is the manager there he let me thoroughly inspect them all) i looked at all of the probably 30 ones on display.. including sony, hp, gateway, toshiba etc.. from 399 to 1999.00 not ONE OF THEM HAD HARDLY ANY LIGHT BLEEDING.. MAYBE 1 OR 2 SHOWED A HINT AND I MEAN A FRAGMENT OF IT.. like still barely anything noticable though.. i mean they were basically flawless all of them.. this blows that dell is this bad.. im pissed at this point
