Im just wondering, how do they effect owning it? Cos otherwise this is the perfect notebook for me right now, but the discolourment down the bottum will be highely obvious during DVDs.

Yup the e1405s have light leakage issues. Not much you can do except return it. I have a new Compaq V3000 which has no leakage.

I otherwise considered the V3000. Did you try the e1405? Do you know if the problem extends to the e1505s screen too?

The E1405's screen isnt the best but its still tolerable. At first it'll seem bad but give it a little time and it'll be fine.

I don't notice it anymore. And quiet honestly, I lower the brightness during DVDs a bit anyway, which even further reduces the "issue" .. I considered the HP & Compaq notebooks in the same price range, but they were quiet a bit more expensive -- and I was still upse about my R3000Z power adapter plug loosening :p
