Hey, I'm probably going to buy a m1330 sometime in december but seen all those complaints about the noisy drive. I've also watched the video of the drive and the noise is really loud.
Do you guys think dell will fix this problem anytime soon? Some of the mac notebooks also have slot loading drives and don't have this problem right?

    Thanks

The main things you should be worried about would be

    1) LCD - since you will be looking at it the most of the times.

    2) CPU whine - it will get you once you notice it.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much.

and i agree with achilles but also want to add

    3). Wobbly feet
4). Some exterior flaw if u'r not lucky :p

    Thanks for the input guys.
I just don't want to end up with a laptop that's going to have all these problems and then go through the hassle of returning it and ordering another one. I've seen many of the complaints of dell's m1330 build quality...

I've had two different M1330s, both of which have a very reasonable noise from the slot loader. Personally, the thump and click of closing the tray is more annoying to me than the slot load noise.

I would expect a good machine, and that Dell will send you a brand new replacement if you don't like it.

The CPU whine seems to come and go, but I don't think you'll even hear it if there's any significant noise in the room, like a fan on low. Either way, I've found that it only occurs on occasion in balanced mode; on power save and high performance modes the noise never occurs.

The drive is not loud at all. The video is a really bad representation. I have mine right here and it's quiet as a mouse!

Being on a computer forum, you're always going to see more threads and posts about some sort of problem or defect.

Keep in mind the many thousands of notebooks Dell ships, and compare it to those who come here for help.

Your chances at getting a defect free notebook is very high. As Samuel said, expect a quality notebook.

Nope, no complains of loudness for me.

Mine came with A06, so I have no idea on what whining noise is about.

I only had a soft mic, but was resolved with a driver update.

I would say go for it...

I'm a satisfied customer right here.

I completely agree with this!! The noise level from the slot-load drive is minimal and I find a tray load drive to be more annoying and louder!

Then an excessively noisy slot-loader must be defective.

Its not that bad. It not like you have to keep loading and unloading a disc every 5 minutes.

Yes, the sound it audible (the buzz is akin to a fly stuck in your drive for 1/2 seconds), but its not catastrophic as some people has put it.

Ok, so my viewpoint has been corrected.
At first, I thought the slot loading drive noise problem is just a m1330 hardware thing, but now after all these great posts, thanks guys, it seems like most of the m1330s are fine. It's just a few of them that have problems.

    Cool.
The only problem now is that the m1530 is rumored to come out sometime soon...
So, I'll probably wait a bit before buying. :D

I think it's more a case that some people are being too anal.
