    The screen brightness drops when AC plug is removed,

    is there anyway of preventing this from happening?

    If you unplug your machine and raise the brightness with your keyboard(fn+uparrow) to match the settings when it is plugged in there shouldnt be a change when you unplug it... I think it maintains two power profiles, plugged/unplugged.

    Correct, the default is to dim on battery to save power.

    You guys are great, thanks a lot. I just got the system yesterday so there is so much that's new to me. I'll be searching through the archives here to get up to speed.

    I guess the next thing I'll need is a wireless home router to connect my DSL to my laptop. Being mobile will be very cool.

    You can change the default settings in the bios so that it doesn't dim at all when you unplug it. But you will have a shorter battery life.

    If you still have Dell's quickset installed, you can also change the settings and make profiles for battery and ac.
