Having both the Vostro and Inspiron in my reach and blessed with that fact that only one of the two is grainy, I can make these comparison shots.
Both WSXGA+ 1680x1050 Glossy
Grainy: Inspiron 1520
NOT Grainy: Vostro 1500
Both in all of it's glory:

Last two pictures aren't image tagged so that your browser will not implode from loading em.
The grain is hopefully visible in these shots...they probably aren't as visible, but definately visible up close.
Enjoy!

I think you messed up the whole deal
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Yeah... I'm getting a "Forbidden Your client does not have permission to get URL /1.1 from this server" for all but the last two images.
-
Under construction, give me 10 minutes or so
-
works on opera
-
NOW enjoy!
-
With the pictures you provided, I can't tell the difference between grainy and non-grainy w/o you pointing it out.
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Maybe it's just the photography, but I thought the difference between
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd109/neo92d/InspironvsVostro828.07008.jpg
and
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd109/neo92d/InspironvsVostro828.07009.jpg
were pretty clear?
EDIT: Is it just me or does the 1520 screen look a lot dimmer too? Is that a result of graininess? -
same, thats what everyone has been complaining about? doesn't look THAT bad. To me one just looks dimmer but not grainier.
-
Why are you lucky enough to own one of each?
-
thanks man, I think ill be fine if I get a grainy screen considering I dont even notice it on those hi-def pics. The think I do notice is light bleed. haha those hi def pics were really hi def, my monitor goes up to 2048 by 1536 and they still dont fit
. anyway thanks a ton man.
-
The grainier screen is suppose to be a bit brighter, but the pictures show the vostro as brighter because of the cameras metering. Don't worry about the brightness differences as I can't really accurately capture the screens light because the light behind me is uneven
And to playloud, those swirls are because of the camera, not the actual screen.
Actually, both of those looked terrible in the closeup shots.
-
-
-
Yeah that's probably what it did, I was metering off the center to make sure everything is equally in focus, I'll redo the shots sometime.
I realize that the grain were hard to see in those smaller pics, hopefully the high res ones show em. -
hey can you confirm the finish on both is exactly the same the black lids i mean?? thanks

Thanks for taking the photo's. I can definitely see the grain on the Inspiron 1520 viewing them on my IBM P260.
By chance did you check to see what brand of screen each of them were? I am guessing that the 1500 is a Samsung as it looks to be warm and they usually come that way with their default calibration from the factory. -
Yep, I confirmed it in the other topic, build is the same besides color
-
Thanks for the pics! Now I have an idea what people mean by "grainy" screens
.
-
-
What are the ID's for the 2 displays? Are they SEC3550's, or are they something else?
-
Mines LPLF300 (Vostro 1500) and Giga's is SEC3350 (Inspiron 1520)
-
yeah the lg's are supposed to be the best ones from what everyone's been saying
-
Well, I got my Vostro 1500 yesterday with a WSXGA+ display (SEC 3550). There is a lot of 'grainyness'. I'm not being paranoid or anything as I've compared my laptop side-by-side to a friends' Inspiron and another family members HP, their screens are crystal clear.
I rang Dell customer support, they guided me through a myriad of settings changes, updating video drivers, and then got me to plug in a monitor. Sure enough the monitor was clear which confirmed there is a problem with the screen, not the Vostro's settings. Dell then said simply 'don't worry, we'll send out a technican to change your screen' ( I have 3 year next business day warranty).
So now I'm just waiting for a call from the technican to arrange a time for my screen to be replaced. Hopefully I get a good one. -
the vostro screen and 1520 screen look the same in the grainy pics.
-
-
I can see the graininess in his 1520 screen, Mine on the other hand is thankfully not grainy like his.
-
I've already emailed dell about the problem but no response yet, expecting a replacement asap. They put me through a BS process to try to make sure the grain is the problem...
One of the steps they wanted me to do involve me taking the power cable off along with the battery WHILE IT WAS ON! It better be bad english on their part. -
when you speak with them tell them you hooked it up to a external monitor.. problems solved they should ask no further questions after that.. thats what i did (and i did really hook it up to a external monitor and problem was solved) but even if you didnt if you know there is a problem tell them this man i just hope i get a lg screen.. i have crap for luck though so im sure ill get stuck with the sec like i did with all the auo's.. really sucks that some people get good systems and we get stuck with s%$t
-
I don't see why Dell makes you do all this crap when it's CLEARLY a manufacturing defect.
No amount of resets and reboots and reinstalls, updates, will do anything.
It;s the coating they use, it's crappy coating that's either not sticking well or somehow getting air stuck inbetween. -
Added two new pictures since i've recently received my 1520 replacement. Still grainy, but better.
-
-
i had wxga+with an AUO2077. was grainy. could notice the sparkle like effect quite clearly. asked for a replacement. dell sent me an AUO again. then when i threatened to return my laptop, they sent an SEC 3157. its much better and clearer.
-
ALL you guys need to say when you call is that you already hooked up to an external monitor and its perfect there is no grain and no issues at all it looks perfect... this will amost always tell them youve done everything and 9 times out of ten they will not argue with you and simply replace it
-
yeah, they make you do all kinds of stupid stuff. was asked to send screen shots of my screen using the prnt scrn key. idiots cant even understand , the problem lies with the coating.
-
lol no one ever listens to me .....
-
well they did ask me to plug my system to an external monitor but since none was available in my vicinity, had to go through all that bs to get my lcd replaced.
-
lol they dont know that..... get my drift.. say yeah okay its plugged in... yeah it looks perfect
-
i have got it replaced, zfactor. i finally have a sec3157. its a good one.i was just telling how irritating an experience it can be when dealing with incompetent technicians
-
i saw that im just saying sometimes you need to be one step ahead of them
-
thats true.
btw do tell us all what screen make you finally get.
-
Just saw this but I am afraid between the jpeg compression and the moire effect the grain is not very easy to make out...
