and I can't seem to find anybody who actually have the laptop reporting in to see if they got the remote control or not. My sales representative said it came as part of the bluetooth "set" so I just want to make sure he's wrong. I know Stella on this board got it so did she not get a remote?
-
-
I think it comes with it if you selected Bluetooth on your laptop I think thats what bluetooth set is, and I don't think Stella got bluetooth on her laptop.
-
In Australia, there is no option for the remote, and it doesnt show up on the confirmation when you order.
However, I called up dell, and I got it added free of charge. Apparently its an optional upgrade. Except it is nowhere on the site. Strange. -
The remote is not a bluetooth remote it uses infrared. It definitely does not come with the 1520 as stella did not receive one, but it might come with the 1420. The remote is shown on the multimedia pages on the instruction manual of the 1420, but is missing from the other two notebook models do idk if this means that it comes standard or not on the 1420, but i doubt it does. This remote is not up on the dell store, but it probably will make an appearance in the future for $30 i bet.

The remote that's shown in the reviewpub review looks like the one I am getting with the XPS.. and that's a bluetooth remote. An IR remote makes no sense since these laptops no longer carry an IR port.
EDIT: Copied from Dell customisation page.

they Are Only Available When You Pick The Multimedia Os, Said One Of The Dell Reps. I Said That I Got Vista Premium And That's The Highest One And She Told Me To Call Sales Department And They Will Take Care Of Me. I Will Update You Guys Tomorrow!

Um, why the big shout?
-
i see no remote in my order as well, i bought the bluetooth.
if i dont get one, you can bet theyll give it to me free. -
I did NOT get it. There is a little 3/4" square rectangle under the Play/Pause button that I believe is the infrared sensor. When I have time I plan on bugging customer service about it .

I am in chat with customer care right now. I sent her the links to a couple of threads and to a review talking about the remote and she said she would be able to send me one. I'm just waiting for her to verify that she's sending me the infrared remote (since I don't have bluetooth) and that it fits in the ExpressCard slot.

When I ordered my 1520 one of the many dell reps all told me that they could not find a infrared remote "the one pictured in the first review" in their system. So, eventually I broke down and bought a $50 bluetooth remote because I need it to do power point presentations for clients in my real estate business.
If they are including an extra infrared remote for free then I would certainly like to get one.
I have an email in to my final sales rep, "by the way, he is one of those senior sales reps on the xps gold team, and is very competent." about the remote because last night I found a infrared remote on the new vostro line under travel accessories for $60 "which I think is a total ripoff considering Canada gets it on the 1520 for free also under travel accessories." I wrote him yesterday and he basically had no clue what I was talking about so hopefully he will be able to check the ordering number on the new vostro line.
I will post when I hear back from Nick. -
The infrared remote comes free in Canada. You just have to select it while you are building it under Media Center Enhancements. For some reason they don't have those options on the US Dell website.
-
Here's what they're shipping to me--can anyone confirm that this is the correct one?
1 FW331 Kit,Remote Control,Notebook Mobile 2008,Philips $.00 -
I have been on the phone with Dell for about an hour, and all they do is keep transferring me to someone else. I did the online chat first with notebook sales trying to see if I can get the ear buds and/or the remote, and he told me to call the parts department and gave me a number.
I called that number and they told me to call the sales department, then transfered me over.
The sales rep told me he couldn't help and transfered me to customer service. From there, I was told the same thing and transfered to the EPP/student rep. The woman I talked to there was a complete b*tch and told me she couldn't do anything for me and is currently transfering me to the online sales rep.
I am becoming extremely frustrated. -
-
It wasnt available when I ordered it, I dont know if it has anything to do with me ordering from student/EPP site, but it is available now.
-
ah when i ordered mine it did not show up when i was selecting what i wanted with my laptop but it was hidden in my order details. I ordered my 1420 on 6/29

I called customer service and asked about a mini-remote for the Inspiron.
I got it,
Part #: 412-0781
You can't find it on the website, but they can pull it up. They are sending it to me in a seperate package.
I made my words bigger just so people can skim the page and not miss it.
Go to this thread for more details.

Thanks again, -
Vostro 1700 and Travel Remote (DW331)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question 1:
This IR remote isn't listed for the Vostro 1700 but is for the inspiron 1720 which is essentially the same thing right? Just wanted to verify there is no reason why it would not work with a Vostro.
Question 2:
What is the part number for ordering off the Canadian site? I know it is DW331 on the US site but that comes up with nothing on dell.ca. Component part #s MR425 and UM250 yield nothing either.
If someone knows how to order this in Canada online it would be appreciated. Don't want to wait for shipping across the border and the headaches and extra time that involves. Ideally I don't want to actually talk to a Dell employee since my previous experience is that they are generally useless. -

Here in UK you can buy it separately for 5.99 pounds.
I got it and without any drivers it works in Windows XP Pro SP2
Can control Firefox, WMP, Winamp, Windows Explorer (browse folders). I guess it will work everywhere, cause the buttons are pretty standard. -
Hi guys
Well, I am brand brand brand new to this forum. I have recently ordered the 1520 and have noticed your guys' messages on here regarding the remote.
Now I know I'm probably a few months late as your posts were back in June and July, ect........BUT.....I wanted to mention a couple of things.......
1. You guys are great. This is an awesome forum and you help get the word out, which is AWESOME
2. After RIDICULOUS chat and phone conversations for I don't know how many days, I FINALLY was able to contact what seemed to be an American from Dell.
After reading your posts about the remote I called up and requested it and DEMANDED that it be added to my Inspiron. After phone call after phone call and transfer after transfer, I FINALLY got them to throw it in for free. But.........
After going to my order details I noticed they gave me the WRONG REMOTE! I was furious. They gave me the one for Media Center which I SPECIFICALLY, on the phone, told them I did NOT have.
So after calling back AGAIN, and put on hold AGAIN, a woman helped me out and I want to confirm for all of you that, according to her, and according to my billing details, the order number for the infared remote is NOT 412-.961. It is 412-0965! THIS is the remote that you want to get that fits in the express slot.
I just felt I should join this group to let you all know and to help you out as you guys have helped me out so much. I just wanted to return the favor to people like Stella and Jet Black and allllll the other posters on here.
Enjoy your Inspirons! I should have mine in a week, can't wait!

And you can get them in Australia, it's on the optional accessory list for around $13AUD.
-
I got mine with my 1520 in India...
-
I've got a remote for my Vostro. Haven't opened it up and used it though. Mine's a chinese made machine.
-
I received mine with my 1520. I specifically selected and paid for it. All of $15 when ordered with a notebook. We're talking about the infra-red remote that fits in the ExpressCard slot, right?

Works perfectly for navigating through photo slide shows, controlling Media Player, iTunes, with the Media Center stuff, etc. -
There are a billion threads about the 1520 remote control...
