Don't get a 200gb @ 4200 rpm, it'll be slow as hell. 4200rpm is almost dinosaur on new computers, and a bigger hard drive is harder to search, so that thing is just a pain waiting to happen. External USB 2.0 would be much faster and cheaper.

actually, a bigger HD has more data density so it's easier to search. that's why a large 5400 rpm drive has similar performance specs as a smaller 7200 rpm drive.

re: OP, the largest i've seen is 160, but nothing surprises me anymore

Yeah, I saw that the other day. Just hold out a little longer. A company just patented technology for 1TB HDDs for notebooks a few months ago. That's some crazy stuff. But I would also suggest an external USB HDD over a 200GB HDD. I'm sure it's expensive as hell.

1 TB drives for notebooks are a long ways off. The biggest 3.5" hard drive available is 750 GB and costs around $425.

Well, I don't know how long it will take for them to become popular, but I just know that it's a new technology that's out there. A few years ago, a 40-60GB drive was top of the line for notebooks and now we're doing 100, 120, and 200. Just a thought.

I wouldn't buy any 4200RPM hard drive. I'd go for the 120GB 5400RPM drive, then pick up an external HDD as posted. The 2.5" models are very, very portable and don't need an external power supply to run - USB only.

I got an 80 GB 5400 RPM with a 2.5" inclosure (firewire and usb) and it works amazing, improving performence enable data cashing

Just so we're clear, I was never considering the 200gb HDD...I was just curious if anyone else knew about this.
