Quick question for any techie. I want to invest most of my money in screen quality. I was looking at the 6000 and they have an available 1900 by 1200 pixel resolution. I'm assuming that is very good. But what is the benchmark? What number is good screen quality? Thanks a lot.

lcd resolution isn't something you benchmark. it is what it is. if you're talking about the vid card, that's a different story.

Text on a 15.4" WUXGA screen will be very small. If you can look at one before buying, I'd recommend it.

Are you going for best screen quality or resolution? The WUXGA is going to be very small, you will probably have to set the DPI up to be able to see anything clearly or without straining. It is personal preference, remember that.

For the best quality, I would go for a Fujitsu.

    What is your budget?

Thanks for the quick response. I'm not trying to spend more than $1500. I realize WUXGA has a 1920 x 1200 resolution. I guess my question is, can you get than in 15.4" or do I need a 17.0" for that type of resolution?

I believe that is only available in 17'' but I think there is a resolution around there with a 15.4".

my 17" wXGA on my i9300 has a natave rez of 1440x900 and I love it.

I also love the matte finish on the screen. NO GLARE. Put the money into the graphics card if you can. Even if you don't 'game', getting a video card that has dedicated memory is crucial to performance. Without dedicated memory for graphics, the GPU will leech ram from your system ram. In other words, if you have 512 mb and you designate 128mb for video (in the BIOS), you'll only have 384 for windows to run on.

Minimum for XP (real life, not on the box specs here) is 256. You really want to run a new laptop on 'that close' to minumum system requirements?

I went for the wXGA screen and I'm happy with it. It's plenty bright (except in my truck, I need window tint!!!) and the geforce go 6800 runs nicely. Everything looks crisp and clean at the native resolution.

Post what you end up deciding and why tho!

    Best of luck.

Yes, you can get 15.4'' WUXGA screen on Dell Inspiron 6000. It's good matte screen, but as mentioned above it's really good idea to get a look and feel of it before you buy. For some people the text looks microscopic and they recommend to avoid 1920 x 1200 resolution, but in fact many popular programs (such as web browsers or text editors) allow you to increaze font size. From another side, high resolution allows one to more easily fit many different windows on the screen (while image editing or doing things like spreadsheets) which is really handy.

In answer to your questions, think the 6000 is offered with a WUXGA option, but I would highly recommend against it. As ninefoot3 mentioned, a lower-resoultion screen with a good video card is a better bet.

    Best,
    Howie
