I typically buy my PC's at Best Buy when they have 12-18 months no interest. Well, that worked for a few years, but now I have my own business and don't necessarily want to take what BB has to offer. I really want/need a 17" monitor. I need a good keyboard (have a Vaio FS550 now that I have literally worn the kb out on) and good power (fast, but not necessarily gaming fast). I don't do media on my laptop (or rarely do) - just a lot of web and business apps - Office, Adobe, RDP to external servers, etc. And a laptop will typically last me 2-3 years.
Sony AR is out because I don't like the placement of the touchpad/mouse buttons. I like the dv9700t and possibly the 8710p at HP and now I have found the 1700 at Dell. I don't like the M1730, but maybe the Inspiron 1720 - which seems a lot like the Vostro 1700 - same case sizes?? How is the kb on the Vostro compared to the 1720? I have seen the 1720, but I would be buying the 1700 off the website. I am also interested in the difference in Dell's TrueLife and HP's BrightView if anyone can compare.
Any suggestions or comments would be welcomed. Honestly, I have a Sony now and the difference between a Dell and a HP is aesthetics, IMO. I am just looking for a solid laptop that will last for a few years.

The vostro 1700 and inspiron 1720 are the exact same machine. Only difference is color.
As for the screen, true life means its glossy. You can look at any laptop that has a glossy screen.
Pick what ever one is cheaper and get the 2-3 year on site warranty. -
nizzy - I noticed that you have a Vostro instead of a Inspiron. Are the 15.4"ers different?

Nope, the vostro 1500 is the same as the inspiron 1520 (which they discontinued now).
Same with the vostro 1400 is the same as the inspiron 1420. -

Thinking about the Vostro 1700
