I recently purchased the e1705 for my sister at college as a graduation gift to get her masters degree.

I think this computer might be too big. The main concern is that when browsing the net in Internet Explorer the websites are soo small on this optimized screen.

We have the Ultrasharp UXGA with Truelife.

Is the resolution on the e1505 the same/ better to read?

    Thanks

They aren't small if you make adjustments in the Quickset

it's not the size of the screen, it's the resolution.

you picked the high res option; WUXGA. if you would have gotten WXGA+, text and graphics would be larger.

do some research on Resolutions versus Screen Size for help.

Ahh ok, so when I order the e1505, which screen should I go with? And will everything be just as sharp?

    1. While in a web Page, go to "view", change text size to Largest....

    and.or

    2. Right click on desktop, go to "properties", then "appearance" change "font size" to Extra Large. Go to effects, make sure 2nd option is "clear type"

    and.or

    3. Go into quickset, "display settings", choose larger icons andfonts and check IE Scaling.

If nothing helps, return laptop I guess...Good Luck

You should try contacting Dell's support. I bet if you say something about why you want to return it, they would be glad to help you so they didn't have to spend the money to get you a new computer.

I decided I'm going to return it, as the computer is mainly for web use and everything is just too darn small at the widescreen resolution.

I'm worried that when i order the 1505 it will be the same? I was operating at 1920x1200

What is the e1505 optimized best at?

I think the e1505 will be fine. Just need to know the resolutions on the certain monitors.

there is just way too much misinformation in this thread.

    to the ORIGINAL POSTER:

you need to do some research on Screen Resolutions to understand what you are doing. it's obvious from your questions that you have not done so. do this before you make your next purchase (you may even decide after further research, not to return the computer).

Or if you use a more capable browser like FF or Opera that have better options for text size. Opera will also magnify the entire site (pictures included).

It's actually pretty sweet. I'm lazy as hell and sometimes I kick my feet up on a foot rest, magnify things to 150% and lean back while surfing the web (wireless mouse).

I believe the e1505 at 1680x1050 would be much better with truelife.. anyone use these settings?

The size of the laptop is a bit too big for my traveling back and forth. I think the 1505 is a good fit.

I have an E1505 (WSXGA) and use it at 1680x1050 (truelife) - it is really nice. In fact, when you go down in resolution to 1200x800, it doesn't look good at all. Everything was a little too small for me, so I made the change to Normal size for Icons and fonts in Quickset and I am as happy as I could be. Highly recommend WSXGA at that resolution.

You should change the DPI setting. (Desktop=> right click=>Properties=>
Settings=>Advanced=> DPI setting (use either large or custom)).

Thanks coolmen, this is what I needed to know...

Anyone have the other montior and use the 1200x800? I am worried that the 1680x1050 might be too small for me. The 1900 resolution on the 17 inch was way too small for my preference..

Maybe I should find a dell outlet to see the difference...

When I originally started shopping for a laptop, I wanted a 17" but after looking at some and handling them at Best Buy and reading on these forums about the E1705, it seems slightly more "buggy" than the other Dell laptops and I just didn't want that big of a computer. It's not a desktop replacement for us - just a convenient extra computer for luxiurious armchair surfing and being able to take a computer with us on vacation and short trips around town. So I am really glad I chose the E1505 - cheaper and lighter and I'm fortunate to have NEVER had a single problem other than the Express card slot is NOT compatible with the Verizon PCIMIA broadband card. But the E1705 is the same - not compatible.

I did NOT get the Ultra Sharp wide screen because many folks in these forums said the resolution was small. I have TERRIBLE near sighted vision problems so I didnt' think it would work well for me. However, seems like the advice here is to you is simply change the settings and maybe your browser to help fix the "smallness" so investigate that before you return the E1705 unless you just want a smaller computer. I have Truelife coating (but not Ultra Sharp) set to the maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 and it works for me with large icon size in Right Click on Start - Properties - Advanced. I also chose Extra Large Font Size in Display - Appearance. Have you tried these two settings and lower resolution on your E1705?

well i have a m140 14.1 widescreen and its is just 1280x800 and i have to say that anythink smaller resolutoin wise would look like ****! i just tried changing the font and icons to large and xl large and they look like ass. if size is important to you then maybe you should look at 14.1 laptops like a e1405. they have a full size keyboard and are what most consider to be the biggest ture poratble laptop.

Yes, my E1505 is at 1680x1050, and it is small, but I LOVE the amount of room for apps, etc. It doesn't really bother me.

I've had problems in the past changing Windows DPI settings, etc...sometimes, it doesn't work right and title bars get messed up, or other strange anomolies.

At 1680x1050, everything is very sharp and well defined.

You can change the font to a larger size to see better. If I had it my way I would get rid of the 17" screen due to sheer size and bulk.

Go to the display option, change the resolution to a more comfortable setting. You can also go into the advance option and change the dpi. Another thing you can do is change the size of icons. You will really have a hard time viewing things at default settings on a e1505, I know because I change from an e1505 to an e1707. lol
