Is now a good time to buy the Dell 9100 with the 15 % off going on now.. Or am I better off holding off for a while for a better deal?

What I have put together it comes to like $2500.-2600. after the 15% off..
The quote I put together is the 2.8 ghz wsx, 100 gig Hard drive, 1gb Ram, 128 mb video & 4 yr warrt..

What's the difference in the processors 2.8 or 3.0 or what ever? Is it worth the extra money to go to the 3.0 or 3.2?

Also, is there a Tv out on the 9100? Is there a ps/2 for a mouse on it?

    Thanks Lolly

What's the speed of the 100 gig HD your looking at? I don't know if you want to "waste" your money on a 4 year Dell Warranty. And what kind of work / gaming do you plan on doing with this 9100 exactly?

I would suggest getting the 60 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive. The 100 GB is only 4200 RPM.The increase in performance is nice with the 7200 RPM drive.

I would suggest getting only a 2 or 3 year warranty if you want to save a little bit more money. I think the 4 year is a little overkill.

My personal opinion is that while Dell's specials change, I think they all end up costing near the same because they will jack up the price on something else.

You might want to wait to see if any coupons are posted on this website that you can add to Dell's specials.

I wouls skip any extended warranty at all, they are the biggest money makers the manufacturers have...It's pure profit for them. If you notebook components last the 1st few months, the probability they will last 3-4 years is up around 98% or more. Take that money you were going to spend an a warranty and buy a personal articles insurance policy for your notebook. I got mine from statefarm for $35/year for $2000 of coverage with no deductible. It covers loss, theft, or any kind of damage from anything except an act of war. A friend of mine recently took his notebook with him on a raft trip through the grand canyon and now it is sitting somewhere on the bottom of the Colorado river; the insurance company just wrote him a check and now he's shopping for new one to replace it.

One other thing before you buy, think what you will be using the notebook for and how. If you need more than 2 hours of battery life you will probably want to get a notebook with the pentium M CPU in it. The P4 is good if your going to always be connected to power, remember to that the P4 is going to need to have a fan running at all times to cool it so it's not going to be quiet either.

    good luck

I dont know, I am probably the only one who recommends as much warrenty as you can afford at the time. Especially for a Dell notebook. Probably because I know the cost involved in getting a notbook repaired often outweighs the cost itself, and this stinks after you just payed off a $2500 unit only to find that the $600 motherboard (plus labor) just died. Just as tempted as I am to drive without insurance. I hate insurance companies, and I have a perfect driving record. But what if theres an accident tomorrow [:0][xx(]

To answer the original question, I feel that you can and will do better for the price. If you keep some patience, and continue to keep your eye daily on Dell coupon sites (findable through a google search) you will soon discover that you can save 25% off. There are people in this forum who have done just that.

I would also like to add that there is nothing wrong with the 3 year mail in service. This is what I had with my last 5150, and I must say they were prompt at fixing it. (albeit it was all the time) After about an hour on the phone jumping through the usual hoops with support, that same day a box arrived at my door. I put the unit in it and off she went. 5 days later is was back, good as new. And I never had to step foot out of my house :). The 4 year complete care is overkill if you ask me.

ok just to say, i think all dell notebooks come standard with tv out (just as long as they dont have integrated graphics) and also, get the 60 gb 7200 rpm hard drive like the other person said, MUCCHHHHH better than the 100 gb 4200 rpm. and yea, dont waste your money on a 4 year warranty, go 2 or 3 years but not 4. and also by now when i'm writing, there is a 256 MB ATi Mobility RADEON 9800

If you get the 1gig ram the hard drive speed isnt that important as it wont be accessing it often except to initially load up. And youre talking a few extra seconds wait is all.

With low ram it has to create temp files on the hard drive and thats where the problems begin, but if its doing that at all you will have slowdowns regardless of drive. High ram bypasses that problem entirely.
