Well, that's too bad this is happening ~ for a brand new lappy  :(...You can get it replaced with a new one w/in 21 days of invoice date. ;) :)

You can also have On-Site come and repair (if you have On-Site coverage)..But personally..since it's brand new, I would go with returning and getting a new one! :)

If your *feeling* the 1530 right now over the S17, then you may want to buy it! I have the 1530...and am very happy with it ;) :)

You have a couple of options to peruse... ;) :)

1.25h seems about right for 17inch laptop with wifi/bluetooth on unless you got bigger battery.

Is it getting hot when you put it on table?, is there anything around the laptop which might be blocking ventilation?.

Check in task manager if there is any CPU intensive application is running in the background.

wow. 1.25h seems very low.. my 1720 has about 25% battery wear and will easily go over 2hours with medium use..
could be your powersaver options arnt configured properly. cause the laptop shouldnt heat up on powersaver.
which battery is this?i have a 9 cell.

For a 17" your battery ain't bad, as a disjointed comparison, I am lucky for an hour on medium usage...It seems you may have a lemon, talk to dell. The 1530 is a dam nice laptop and will be more portable with better battery life. They may make it easier to get a 1530 while on the phone with the returns department. GL

It definitely sounds like you're not happy with your laptop - return it. I would also steer clear of the xps unless you want to get integrated graphics as the nvidia 8400/8600 overheat, especially in the Dells. Do some more research and I wouldn't be surprised if you went with a different brand. BTW, my HDX 20 inch "laptop" gets around 2.5 hours without power saving features on. 1.25 is just unacceptable IMO.

Bottom line, you gotta be happy with your purchase. It's a lot of money and you deserve a great product. If you don't plan on using your laptop in a coffee shop, get the HDX, it's freaking awesome.

Don't worry about the graphics in the XPS line, there are thousands and thousands of people who haven't had a single problem with them, you just don't hear from them, you only hear of the problems. People don't usually post to just say their laptop is working perfectly lol.

If you get an XPS 1530 get the 8600M GT graphics, its a gorgeous laptop, one of the best looking available at any price and nice and light for it's size.

you know, a 17" laptop is "portable" but to me, battery life has never been the deciding factor...

i chose a 17" fro screen size, graphics, processing and how it works around my needs for semi-mobile computing.

i always just take it from point A to point B and keep it plugged in.

if i were looking for a portable laptop to use on-the-go, then definitely, battery life and weight starts to play a big role...

but as Cin said, you should be satisfied beyond any shadow of a doubt... you'd hate yourself if you "persuade" yourself to be satisfied with something you are doubtful with...

I tend to have my laptop plugged in 90% of the time. I don't really take trains or anything so rarely have a need to rely on the battery.

Wow thats bad to hear. I just got my 17" Studio and I have been loving it so far. No issues at all. My battery with Vista set to better battery life gets around 2hrs- 2 1/2hrs which is fine for me considering the 17". As far as the heat goes mine I can use on my lap no problem. It does get warm but nothing compared to say my Macbook Pro 15".

    Good luck !

    ryank82,

Is your Studio 17 equipped with an LED LCD at 1920x1200? I thought the 1920x1200 LCDs were not LED.

Yep the m6400 had an LED screen (the one at silverston anyway). I'm guessing this S17 I have (or will finally have tomorrow) is going to last me less than a year, then my nephew get's it and I upgrade to the artist edition or XPS model or whatever they call the Montevina version. Basically the new version is going to have the LED screen as well as hybrid graphics so can last for pretty much the whole day!

I'm also hoping that someone makes some progress with the SSD drives so that they function as well and have a comparable capacity as the HDDs they are set to replace. No idea why no-one has yet added the necessary read/write caching to stop OS freezes yet.

Is there a way to test this?? No idea for sure. Thought when I ordered the machine it said it was led. Not for sure though. I went for the highest options on the screen. Either way I love the lcd on this laptop. Best I have ever used.

EDIT: Updated my sig until I find out for sure haha lol.

    Good for you :)

It's always warming to see someone stand up for their rights. Never accept something you aren't happy with. Sadly since Dell went the way of outsourced customer service, the customer service reps have been really useless and untrustworthy. They tell you complete nonsense to get you off the phone and sadly a lot of people simply believe them and don't persue the matter.

I am returning my Studio 15 this week. It was delivered on the 2nd and I have been having trouble with the start up screen loading and even though members have been posting suggestions to fix it , nothing works. My brother used my laptop this morning and told me that for some reason the laptop took more than 15 minutes to shut down (no mention of updated being installed and even then it shouldn't take 15 minutes). Now I am trying to decide if I want to get another Dell or head to Future Shop or Staples to find a new one. The bad thing about this is that all the back to school sales are over. It is a shame though because I really liked the laptop, but it shouldn't have problems like this after less than 2 weeks. I am not sure if an exchange would make a difference
