Has anyone tried this before? Call Dell, threaten them to cancel your order and in return get some credit or discount or something for free. Then, you really cancel that order and order a new one, using your credit or discount that you got.![]()
I know its an old trick, but can someone advice me on how I should go about it.
PS: I'm not interested in any "shame on you" kinda replies. Either add to the knowledge, or simply refrain from posting

The only way to get a credit is to get the customer service manager on the phone. I have been going through hell trying to get my replacement for my broken 1520 and after getting the run around by the normal indian support i got the indian manager and he got me a $108 credit. By the way i am still waiting for my delayed notebook to come in.

You would have better luck if you got your laptop and then called and told them you wanted to return it

WHAT!!!?!
I think the Indian customer support is doing much better then the americans!
When you talk to Americans and get mad or yell. They becomes dicks, and put you on hold for no reason or hang up. Indian, their really mellow and easy to deal with. -
let's just say i am so glad i don't work at dell.
i would hate to have so many callers complaining for no reason.
if they had a reason...that'd be k...but things dont look to be spinning this way anymore. -
If you are just acting like a jerk to get free money or other compensation guess what that makes you - a professional jerk.
Show some class, Hitman47.
I can see complaining about a specific issue that has genuinely disappointed you, making you genuinely consider returning the laptop.. but calling up to bluff just to try and get freebies... Thats sad. -
Thats really bad character
-
Atleast with the american customer support they will actually give me the info I am looking for.
I do find it wrong though to call up and fake a problem just to get money back. -
My recommendation is to practice good ethics and not call and harass Dell. Think about it folks, people call and hassle them, they have to get more reps, they have to pay those reps and costs go up for all of us because Dell has to charge more.
Companies would rather not have your business if you're going to be a large cost to them by calling persistently, so they'll gladly cancel the order rather than deal with the cost incurred by trying to support you. -
-
As for hitman's question, I think if there is nothing wrong with laptop then it's a blatant scam to do that to Dell, however you could try a more honest way and just call them up and tell them about the offer you see on the website and ask them if they will beat that offer if you order of the phone(it's in the interest of a sales person to sell more laptops, so most of the time they will beat the offer) -
-
I am not wasting everybodies time for calling them .Dell is the one that is billing me for a laptop that is broken (it was received damaged). There indian support refuses to give me any info what so ever on the status of the replacement. I had to call 4 times just to get somebody to tell me that it was delyaed and the part that was delayed.
I normally deal with the U.S. based customer support (i am a network admin with a huge dell account by trade) and I only have to ask once and get the info I need right away.
So dont just state that everybody should just call once and thats it. People with legitimate problems have to call the indian customer service a couple of times just to get an answer out of them that should normally be given out the first time. -
Its the whole issue of morality. But, where's your morality when you slaughter an 800+ pound animal (an avg. cow weighs that much) to satisfy your taste?

Working with the reps via the telephone or online service on a legitimate issue is one thing. The original post in this thread described something alltogether different.
As for working with any company on a legitimate grievance, making threats generally is a shortcut to not getting what you want. Simply state the nature of the problem, what you have done thus far, ask what the company would like you to do next, perhaps state what you would like to see as a remedy, and see where it goes.
I have had about 85:15, positive:negative, results using these techniques over the years. Sometimes the final result is simply to stop doing business with the company. I have encountered some of those, too.
But, in the end, the result is not all that matters. I find that I need to feel that I did all I could do and that I handled myself in a manner that does not leave me with a negative self image. After all, I am more important than any product! -
For anyone thinking about trying this, I called and cancelled my order for legitimate reasons and I was NOT offered any compensation/incentive to keep it. The rep was very matter-of-fact--he asked why I was returning it and then simply ordered the pick up.
-
While trying to get Vista Premium on a Vostro 1400 I cancelled a few orders. The reps never cared and just cancelled what I asked for.
-
get some morals. Your scheme, along with others is costing other people time, and money. -
you threaten to cancel your order or return your order, they'll just simply cancel or process the return. I mean seriously who are you to threaten Dell, one order is nothing to them. They much rather serve their "normal" customers who don't randomly complain about non existent issues.

I dont find anything immoral about eating meat. My religious beliefs only urge me to eating it sparingly, and less in summer, if I want to remain healthy - but that eating meat is not at all immoral. -
i think that threatening is a very bad way to put it. i must confess we must all feel liek we've been screwed by dell one way or another and at times like this, we also feel helpless. i think the thing with dell is that you should alway sknow what you want, that's the best way to be happy. threatening dell won't get you anywhere. if you want something, ask it and they will help you.

Once, I tried to cancel Xbox Live, but it was registered to an old credit card we didn't have anymore. The Indian person said there was no way to help me without that information, but I called again and got a nice American woman. I calmly told her my situation, and she found some other way to varify my identity.
It's funny. Why would tech support be so nice to someone they won't recieve any money from anymore? She didn't know I was only canceling it because I set up a new one already!
Only go for discounts and credit if you feel you actually deserve it. Just get the notebook. If something is wrong with it, unload on Dell sales. Otherwise, just be legitimate and enjoy your product.
I don't eat beef, but not for any moral reasons. I just hate the taste. Only cow I eat is in McDonalds cheeseburgers, but I guess that's not really beef. -

These sort of threads aren't welcomed here for good reason. Try slickdeals, now those guys will tell you how to murder your grandmother for her insurance money.

Either add to the knowledge or ignore this thread. Its funny how people who claim to be "honest" & "moral" are swarming this thread.
If it aint your thing, stay out of it. Period! -
Unless you really are considering returning your computer, it's a scam. Unless you are going to actually return it if they don't offer you compensation, it's a scam.
-
Well, not that I have anything to add to help you scam Dell, but your idea of penny pinching, is nothing more than a excuse... Either way it's WRONG...
With your logic, it's okay if I come to your house and take your laptop, cause it's my way of penny pinching.
Sad. -

The easiest way to get money back for a 1520 is the GPU. I did know what i was supposed to be getting, and they gave me something different. I got $100 back for the problem. For you it might not be morally right, but obviously you don't really care,
