Just wondering. A guy from Banctec came to my home yesterday to replace the RAM in my 1520. After he was done he packed his little bag and stood up and looked at me as if he were waiting for something. There was a brief bit of silence and awkwardness, so I directed him to the door. After he left, I got to thinking about it - maybe he was expecting a tip. I dunno.

Soooo - Do you/ Have you tipped your Banctec (or other in-home tech service repair person)? Is that the customary thing to do?

HELL NO DONT TIP. You PAID for warranty and that laptop, you didnt pay to tip strangers.

Although a cup of tea etc and talking to him may have got you a free upgrade??

Screw tips unless this guy is working at very strange hours or something. Offering him/her a beverage or snack is always courteous.

yeah its a tough call.. if he is very careful and does a great job i mean no scratches or any breakage etc... of anything at all... if he's really careful with your notebook (some are def not trust me i watched a friends get worked on and the guy flipped it over and dropped it on the table like a freakin toy.. we were both like OMG... but if he's good and does his job i would throw him 10 or 20$ tell him to go get lunch or something...as others have said if he's a jerk or does further damage i def would not tip him

When i get my laptop im gonna complain about the smallest thing to get a tech to fix it. Then when they come i will offer drink and some food, purposely give him a sh*t chair to sit on, then bring out a nice leather chair to sit on and work. Then ill chat to him, ask a few questions about his work, but try not to annoy him, then i will offer a £10 ($20) for a free upgrade to the processor or the hdd. Im gonna complain twice so i have to find 2 small things to complain about for the tech to come out twice. Make a jokea about it the 2nd time and THEN i will offer the bribe. Offering the 1st time will probably not work.

I tip a lot, more than anyone I know. I would not tip for a warranty repair.

Now if you casually mention how you would love to have ultimate instead of basic or he finds a way to get you a free processor upgrade or something, hook the man up. But for normal work (especially swapping RAM which has got to be the easiest thing to do to a laptop), I say no tip.

The techs that attend cannot get you an upgrade as the replacement parts are sent to them, or yourself the day before. The part is sent as an exchange based on what your system is set up with.

The only way to get an upgrade as an exchange is to nicely talk to the Tech when calling in and explaining this is frustrating.

At that pint, he or she can give you a 'one time gesture of good will' and that is what it is called when you get it.

Later on if you have problems with that part, be ready for it because they replace it with a part matching your original configuration and not the newly upgraded part.

Been there and live through the fighting when my 160Gb 7.2 went lerplunk and they sent a new 80Gb7.2 again. It took alot of convincing by me.

I feel ike it sometimes. When I had my M1210, the Tech was here so many times to try and help me figure out the squealing, my wife used to joke about us doing up a room for him. He DID have dinner here once.

Its the same with my Purolater delivery guy. he is here probably 3 times a week with deliveries from dell; he jokes at what my computer arsenal must look like.

Hell no. It's Dell's stupid fault for the need to have them here anyways. I don't care.
