Went to the store, picked up a Sony, cancelled my 1520 order. So far, it's been running reat, VERY quiet, VERY cool. I can confirm that the little chirping is from the Core 2 processors, though. Hopefully your new notebooks come soon! I'm out.

Yeah. The screen is amazing. God it's lovely. Wow. Haha. I swear my internet is faster on the laptop than my other two computers. Haha. It's nice. I'm surprised I can keep it on my lap without it being too hot.

I didn't spend that much, haha. Why do you think they're so bad? They're nice and sleek, while most of the Dells are bulky, even the 1520.

What model did you get and what specs?

I looked into Sony laptops but my requirements were pretty strict and most didn't meet my criteria.

I was looking for something small and light, w/a display <15", 7200 rpm hard drive (many Sonys only have 4200 rpm (!!!) drives and almost none even offer 7200 rpm as a choice), no Intel graphics, and Intel Santa Rosa chipset and processors w/800 mhz FSB. The only thing that met my criteria was the Sony SZ6 series which was unavailable until very recently. Even today at http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/product/VGN-SZ680+Build-to-Order+Series, they still seem to be unavailable and I've been unable to see one in person.

So, how are you enjoying 256MB NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics on your Sony? Oh wait, I don't think you have 256MB NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics on your Sony.

So, how are you enjoying the T7500 processor on your Sony? Oh wait, I don't think you have the T7500 processor on your Sony.

So, how are you enjoying the hard drive running at 7200 RPM on your Sony? Oh wait, I don't think you have the hard drive running at 7200 RPM on your Sony.

So, how are you enjoying the 2.0MP webcam on your Sony? Oh wait, I don't think you have the 2.0MP webcam on your Sony.

I'm pretty sure the hard drive on this notebook is 5400 RPM. Yes, it's Intel, but after all, you get what you pay for. I think Sony is a bigger name in technology than Dell. I know people in Europe that haven't even heard of Dell. That's because they don't care. They use Sony and have been really happy with them. I decided to give them a chance, so here I am, with a Sony FZ. It's mostly for school, music, and videos. I've been using it for an hour so far, speakers are great, doesn't get hot, really fast, doesn't hang like some laptops. Also, it's better than waiting 2 months for a ****ing Dell laptop. By then, there'll be new technology.

Don't you think it's a little presumptuous to think that he may even need any of the above. The graphics card, well, that depends on whether he/she games. The processor is dependent on whether he/she does processor-intensive tasks. With the webcam, maybe he or she doesn't use one?

For the hard drive, sure, i guess i can give you that. But, most people would be satisfied with a 5400rpm drive.

Besides, without him/her stating what he/she use the notebook for, i feel as though your reply was uncalled for and unneeded.

Obviously the blame has to be put on Dell - the delays are unacceptable for some who cannot wait that long. Don't mind the anger you're seeing from the other Dell customers. ;)

Hope you're happy with the Vaio and that it doesn't develop any problems. If what I've read of their service is true, you'll be begging for a Dell Customer Service rep soon enough. :p

    I dont know about that.

I've gone through 1 Sony PC, 2 Sony TV's, 2 Sony stereos, 3 sony portables audio devices, and 3 Sony Monitors and I forget what else but they were all outlasted by products made by other brands except maybe the PC which did alright but that was in 96.

And I agree their warranty sucked incredibly.

This just goes to show that Dell's delays are becoming so long that people are sacrificing critical components in their computers to avoid having to wait so long. It is quite obvious with the specs in qwazzy's signature that he was planning to run demanding applications. Chances are that qwazzy paid more for his Sony than he would have for the Dell.

In my opinion, qwazzy will regret not waiting longer to get the Dell. Unfortunately, some people, and qwazzy might be one of them, could not wait to receive their computers due to the beginning of the fall semester and the estimated shipping dates of Dell laptops being long after that.

Listen...this thread was not to get out of control. It's a forum and they're laptops. I think it's my money, I can spend it on WHATEVER I want. It looks like I got good specs from Dell, but I cannot wait anymore, the wait time is just ridiculous. The Sony does have its pros and cons, but then again, so does the Inspiron.

the sad part is your dell was probably going to go into boxing by the middle of this week if it wasnt already in boxing right now. you would have had it either by the end of this week or the beginning of next week...so much for that $100 coupon, huh?

First off, I think its not for others to judge about qwazzy's decision. He bought a product that wasn't delivered by the promised date and he chose to take his money elsewhere. If the line at the McDonald's drive thru is long, I go to Wendy's! Same difference.

I hope you enjoy your new system qwazzy! And good luck @ school!

    Second off...

    A question for pragun:

How did you get so many freebies from Dell? Tell me your secrets, please!

That's sad...I have a 1520 on order, but am posting this from a BEAUTIFUL Vaio that I love. I for one, don't give a single hoot what kind of graphic card I have. Whatever can run Firefox. My processor is fine, it runs everything flawlessly. My 5200 HD (could be 4200, I have no idea), is more than quick enough for me. I wouldn't know what to do with a webcam.

Keep in mind this is on an older computer, a VGN-S260.

It's funny that you think that what you feel makes a good computer is a necessity to everyone else. You (probably) don't own stocks in Dell. Don't get your panties in a wad because he didn't want to wait.

Yeah you guys are right. I ordered a nice computer from Dell because it was in my budget. The VAIOs are more expensive, and the components aren't as good. I'm SURE the screen is way better. I'm in love with it. :p

The point is, the OP canceled his order for a machine w/certain specs and got a machine w/lesser specs and previous gen technology.

As for graphics hardware, Intel on-board video is terrible in terms of perf. As for hard drives, laptop hard drives are too slow and slow rotational speeds == high latency and lower transfer rates. You might think whatever you've got is "quick enough" for you, but if you swapped it w/a 7200 rpm modern laptop drive, you'd likely notice a big difference.

You don't have to explain yourself, or justify to others why you got the sony. If you like it, you like it. That's all that matters.
The people here can be a little tough some times, I got "critiqued" too for me trying to sell my e1705 for $2000. :D Just part of life. ;)

FWIW, if anybody is in a hurry for a new Inspiron, there are plenty to be had with (usually) same day shipping at the Dell Outlet. Yes, they have added all the new Inspiron series (1420, 152x, 172x) and have a good selection to choose from.

The prices aren't great though...I think Dell knows the delays on new systems might push people to buy from the Outlet and why give 'em away!

I've ordered a TON of stuff from the Outlet over the years and everything arrives in new condition with the same warranty as original.

Now, I'm just waiting for some Outlet coupons to show up...
