What is the first thing to do? Download all anti virus and then spyware? Would I need to partition the drive? I never had to do anything technical with any of my Powrbooks/Macs. With macs, I only loaded up on the anti-virus and firewall stuff and hit the surf/net.

For you Dell fans, what was the first thing you checked out before pwring up? I know I will send out my rebates (over 300.00) right away but that is the easy part. I want to load up my Office 2003 then the antivirus stuff then the antispyware...any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.
    A sincere and foaming macmac

    My personal opinion...

Before installing anything, I would recommend reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP (CD will come with your system) I found that Dell puts alot of excess crap that slows down boot time and overall performance of the computer.

You will find that your computer will run a heck of a lot faster without that extra stuff Dell preinstalls.

I read a review on zdnet where the guy received a notebook that had one component wrong and support wouldnt let him return it. Therefore I would check that everything is as you ordered it. If not be prepared to wage war on what appears to be a good company gone bad! [ :D] [} :)] Or at least the support end of things from what I've heard.

    Dear nesbo and zmax,
Thanks. Mentioning the extra/excess software, is some of this Dell's version of an office application - some sort of word processor and note taking app? Video/photo apps?

I will keep in mind both suggestions. I hope the windows world is less complicated than I will experience today.

    Thanks again, Macmac
