nothing feels more fresh than a reformat.

It makes it feel like your own notebook, everything custom for you.

yes they will let you reinstall. If they ever give you a problem, call them up over the phone and do a phone activation.

You paid to use the OS on that notebook and you're entitle to as many reinstalls as you want.

Are you supposed to buy a new OS if your HDD crashes?

The key on the bottom is usually an OEM key and you can use it on your machine 10 times a day to reinstall the os on that machine if you want. You just can't install with that OEM key to another machine (per the eula anyway). The retail version is different and allows for transfers to other machines provided you delete before moving to the other machine.

err no. :p You can install it lots of time, but if you keep re-activating eventually it will fail and force you to call Microsoft so they can quiz you as to why you keep installing their software. I had to do this once and it took about 20mins not a big deal.

When installing Vista from scratch make sure you un-check the option to automatically activate windows when you get a internet connection. It's right near the start of the install, when you enter your key I think.

You can use the key to re-install just do not activate it until you are happy with the install and know you will not need to re-install it again for a little while.

What I do is make a clean install, check everything is good, then I activate it and use Acronis True Image to make an image of my drive. Then if I need a clean install again I just re-image the drive in 10mins I have a clean install and no activation headaches. I also make images at different levels of the install, one with drivers, one with applications, etc.

I've never heard of this but it sounds like it's happened. Usually you should not have to do this. Most OEM OS's come preactivated anyway if you use the OEM disc supplied with the lappy. At least that is the case with mine.

Acronis True Image, ahhhhh what a lifesaver :spinny:!! That is the best 42.50 I ever spent. It is freakin awesome, easy to use and what a timesaver. 7 minutes and my dual boot, nicely config's OS is up and running.

Guys, I think you missed the point of what this program actually does... It just uninstalls popular bloatware programs. It doesn't show you how to reinstall Vista or anything, just uninstalls bloatware so that you don't have to reinstall Vista if your not comfortable doing that.

Ahh but see the OEM restore disks are just images made by Dell or whoever of Windows. And it might (I have never used one myself) come with some bloatware already on it. When you do a clean install from scratch using the Vista DVD you will normally have to activate it. Atleast I always have to.

@larson: yah but the problem with that program is that just un-installing the bloatware often still leaves loads of crap on your hard drive, and registry. That's why we kind of just went straight into the best way to do a clean install. :)

Is formatting/reinstalling with Vista like XP? Cuase I remember the difference between 98 and XP and not knowing what to do without a DOS prompt

my question is if I don't get install media with my laptop, can I use a vista install disk and install it with my OEM key and be able to authenticate?

To Remove Bloatware From Your New Dells or Not To Remove Bloatware From Your New Dells... That is the question...

Was gonna skip this reply but I could have used it once before learning the hardway...

With regards to Vista, I have reactivated 8 times now without once their being a phone call necessary; each time was online. Im the typical junkie who has to try Vista then Vista/XP Dual boot and so on. So that answers that question...

Now for the reinstallation, I would suggest extreme care if you arent computer savvy. First off, when you reinstall Vista, you will find that your system is now starving for drivers that you also deleted that arent part of Vista. (For example, lets say you just got that great solid state 32 gb on the new m1330 and found out they required but didnt supply a driver)

You need to search out and reinstall drivers. As this is a new machine with Vista being less than a year old, I wouldnt trust dell to have all the updated drivers on their website, nor would i trust the system disk to have everything; its just the way it is.

Another example...say you formatted and reinstalled SB Audigy. For those who have been through it, they will know that initial reinstallation was a heartache as you had to practically beg for a new activation key which was only valid once.

Just a thought for someone who truly is a computer junkie... all junkies learn the hard way.

PS... I appreciate the post regarding this program as it is free and I have discovered, not only removes the bloatware, but also accompanying registry keys specific to that bloatware. This is a valuable thing. Again, thanks.

Someone had the problem of installing the drivers, dell doesnt have a nvidia 8600m gt driver. Thats enough for me to live with the bloatware, or atleast until i see a 8600 driver.

that is BS, sorry. dell has a fully functional vga driver on their homepage. it just states 8400M but can also be used with 8600M cards. already reinstalled the OS on my book.

if you cannot live with it go check www.laptopvideo2go.com for laptop-suited drivers.....

Good points, I also got a little worried when reading some of the questions asked here.

If you have never installed Windows before then I would not even try unless you are ready for a few hours of configuration fun. And if you really do want to then make sure you have access to the internet from another computer to find any drivers you forgot to download, and for access to forums and other trouble shooting sites.

This program is great for people without the install disks, or without the experience to do a full re-install of windows. It will probably not be quite as good as a clean install, but it is the next best thing.

Nobody has answered my main question. Will normal (non-Dell) Vista installation media work with Dell's product key? In Canada they wouldn't let me purchase the OEM media, which I got the impression you could do.

I have no problem tracking down drivers and such and all the configuration, I actually find that part fun. I've had to reinstall XP at least 4 times on my secondary computer.
