I really like the all black looks of the Vostro's, but I was wondering if it is painted or is it solid black plastic? I was just wondering if it would show signs of wear like other silver Dells I have had before.

That would be the deciding factor for me know as I am about to order one or the other. Hardware - wise I would make out a little better with the I-1720 than the Vostro, the 7200 RPM hard drive comes at a premium with the V.

Other than that a similarly configured Vostro is only slightly more expensive (just a few$$) than an identically equipped 1720.

The Vostro is more expensive?!

IMO get whichever is cheaper. They really are exactly the same, really. Only difference is LOOKS.

I've got the Vostro 1700 and I can't really tell if it's painted or solid black plastic. If I had to guess, I'd say the exterior is black molded plastic and the interior is painted. I say this because the exterior is just a flat black (actually a very dark gray) and the palm rest seems to have a little bit of a sparkle to it. Either way it's a high quality job out of the box. I got the Vostro because I was able to save about $350 off a comparably equipped Inspiron by talking to my small business rep...

If you compare the same exact configuration, the 7200 rpm hard drive is 325$ more.

Try understanding my post first before reacting. I only said "the Vostro is more expensive?!" because it used to be the cheaper laptop between the two [Vostro and Inspiron].

I didn't say the Vostro is cheaper. I said get whichever is cheaper. In the OP's case, as he mentioned, the Inspiron is cheaper, therefore he should get it.
