Every one here has been praising how grainfree the toshiba LED screen is compared to the CMO screen.
I received my toshiba LED screen yesterday and immediately realized how grainy it is. This is coming from someone who has been using screens on the 700m, m140, m1210, and m1330 - and they all looked grain free to me in the past. But instantly turningon my LED screen, i realized how grainy it was. It looked like my Dell 2005fpw flat panel monitor, but not as grainy.
Is it possible my toshiba LED is defective? Has anyone else compared the toshiba LED with the CCFL screen?
My impression is that the toshiba LED is superior than the CCFL in every way but viewing angle and grainyness. It's got better contrast, whiter whites, and vibrant colors. But the grainyness looks very bad when Windows Clearfont is activated in vista. and kinda distracting.
I don't want to create problems that aren't there. Bt just want to get other people's perspective and find out if mine is defective so I can exchange within the 21 days.

What resolution is you LCD screen?
-
1280x800. it's got that sparkly apparence on white and grey backgrounds. i wish there was a dell stand around for me to check out. the best buy here doesn't have the led screen on display.
-
Your best bet is to ring up dell and ask for a replacement screen, I think they issue people with a new one in these cases! There are a few threads around explaining what people do when they get a faulty screen!

I have the CMO LED and its "Grainy." Its due to the Glossy coating and nothing else.
-
I don't have the CMO screen, I have Toshiba screen that is not suppost to be grainy...which is why I am asking since it looks grainy to me.
I am wondering if this is just specific case where I got a bad screen, or perhaps my grain standards are too high.
EDIT: I would like for people with toshiba LED displays to let me know how it compares with the dell ccfl or previous ccfl they've owned, in terms of grainyness.
Thanks in advance. -
I just got a replacement laptop with the toshiba LCD2306 screen, and I have it set up here next to the one with the CMO screen. Also for comparison I have a Sony 17" desktop CCFL monitor up and running. I find the grain of the Toshiba screen very slightly less noticeable than the CMO grain. The horizontal banding I see in the CMO screen, where every other line of pixels looks slightly darker or lighter than the adjacent one, especially when viewing the screen from low eye positions, is nonexistant on the Toshiba screen. The Toshiba and CMO both have much more grain than the desktop monitor.
However I am not happy with this Toshiba. I'm a photographer and will color calibrate my display, so having good contrast and color gamut are important to me. Unfortunately the Toshiba is worse then the CMO in both regards. The whites are about the same on both screens, but the blacks on the CMO are much darker and inkier (as they should be) than the Toshiba where the blacks are lighter (side by side).
Also the color gamut is less on the Toshiba... primary colors look more washed out.
And to top it off, the CMO has a much better side to side viewing angle and slightly better up/down viewing angle.
I'm thinking about keeping the CMO or trying for a replacement to the Toshiba, but first I'll color calibrate both displays to make sure it's not an adjustment issue. -
Toshiba LED LCD2306 is not grainy. Period!

I got the TMD one on a recent computer. It sucked, I don't like it. It looks like my tablet, and I prefer the traditional laptop screen.

I have the Toshiba LED LCD2306 and it is not grainy
-
Toshiba LED is grainy...
But I recently saw the CMO LED, that thing is horrible...it's even more grainy and has this horizontal lines all over. So not worth the extra money and lightness factor. Heck I wouldn't take it even if it was a free upgrade. -
Makes you wonder if the OP's screen really is grainy or if he just doesn't know what grainy is hehe.

My replacement m1330 came with the Toshiba LED panel and while it certainly does have a degree of "graininess" that gives it a bit of a paper-like texture, it is worlds better than the CMO LED screen that I got on my original m1330. The CMO was both grainy and plagued by the horrible horizontal lines that others here have mentioned, and when I put them side by side, the difference in clarity was pretty large in my opinion. On the CMO panel, everything light colored looked like it had a striped texture to it, which was pretty irritating. The CMO panel was a bit brighter, but seemed to have a slight yellowish tint to it compared to the pure whites on the Toshiba panel that I got.
Personally, the graininess does not bother me all that much because it is pretty similar to how my old Toshiba Satellite P25-S609's CCFL backlit LCD panel looked, although that one is a matte finish screen and the m1330 is glossy. I am plenty happy with my Toshiba panel despite the fact that it is not 100% flawless. -
I have a 2306 and a Dell TrueLife 1908 sitting side by side; while the color "warmth" differs slightly between the two, the non-graininess is equally non-existant in both.
The TrueLife coating does increase glare, and increase the ease with which one can get the screen dirty with fingerprints and the like. -
(YES - it IS an LED panel - it was a replacement for a CMO)
It's been around a week since I got it in and I must say I am happy
about the grain, the blacks and the saturation / contrast - pretty much everything but...
I feel it is on the blue side, so tonight I will get the Huey Pro and check / calibrate. Once this is done, I'll also be able to judge better overall.
But, the Sammy is considerably superior to the CMO in my first impressions. -

I finished calibrating my CMO and Toshiba displays with my GMB (Xrite) Eye One match monitor calibrator. Now
-The color gamut on both is close enough they look the same
-The contrast is noticeably but not extremely better on the CMO.. blacks a bit darker and whites every so slightly brighter on the CMO. The blacks are almost the same when there is no ambient light. The toshiba screen has lighter blacks when there is ambient light, because the antireflective coating reflects more light.
-The Toshiba doesn't look as black as the CMO when both are powered off and there is ambient light.
-Horizontal and Vertical viewing angles much better on the CMO
-Graininess very close, but slightly more grainy on the CMO
-Horizontal line problem, only noticeable when looking at the display with your eyes in a low position like near the keyboard, exists only on the CMO but not the Toshiba.
-The "rippliness" of the screen surface is somewhat greater on the CMO, meaning the edge of an outdoor window reflected in the screen will look straighter on the Toshiba and more ripply in the CMO
The calibration device reported the brightness of the CMO at 266 cd/m^2, and the Toshiba at 232 cd/m^2. I'm not sure how reliable this measurement is but it does correlate with my perception that the CMO is very slightly brighter, not enough that you would notice unless they were side by side.
After this test I think I'm going to keep my CMO. Now I've got to see if I can get it into the case of the replacement laptop that has other fixes... -
My Toshiba LED is very sparkly. My Dell flat panel also has it to some extent. I'm getting a replacment in a few hours, so we'll see how that goes.

I just recieved my m1330 in the UK, I got the Toshiba LED LCD2306. It is slightly grainy, most noticeable on white backgrounds, but it's not bad at all really. The colours, vibrancy and brightness are all excellent and so I am very happy
-
LOL thanks Dell for replacing my Toshiba with a CMO after telling me that I'd receive the same part #. And to make it even better, it's got the wonderful horizontal lines on top of the sparkle, making it 10x worse. Time for a replacement.
Oh, and they sent out the wrong parts. I requested a bezel and they sent out the laptop base.
One more edit - and it flickers! Oh how I pity you guys with the CMO screens. This is atrocious. -
I got my UK 1330 with Toshiba panel last week and must say when I first turned the laptop on I was a little dissapointed with the display.. Definetely grainy - that kind of paper look to whites, however just as a previous poster mentioned the overall quality in terms of black level, colour vibrancy etc is great.
Looking at high res photos is brilliant and movie playback is spot on.
It's just the whites which are grainy and I think the overall light levels across the screen are a little inbalanced. I.E slight movements of my head affects the display, though this is *very* much dependent on ambient light where I'm working. In bright areas the screen looks a lot better. Just have the feeling more control over brightness would be useful.
I think I was all setup to expect something truly stunning as all the reviews talked about White LED displays as being super bright and vivid. This is my first laptop so I suppose i didnt have a point of reference other than my desktop monitors (20 inch V7's which are stunning).
Also, there is always a period of time to get used to a display. For years, whenever I got a new display I immediately hated it and got eye strain for the first couple of days or a week after getting it. Then once used to it I would love it. Got the same problem here I think..
Maybe a new panel would be better (LG or Samsung), who knows.. Probably not worth the hassle to find out..
Oh and another thing that should be stressed is that it's worth playing with the NVidia settings to improve the display. The default settings are far too washed out for me.. So I've reduced gamma and played with brightness and contrast etc.. Worth trying.
I also think that, as other posters have mentioned, the covering on these screens are what causes the graininess.. I doubt any screen is 100% grain free.. We just have to accept how these screens are and their current limitations...
Saying that though, if I ever get to compare screens with another 1330 owner and their's is much clearer I will not be happy.. -
My Toshiba Lcd2306 is fine and not grainy at all
Toshiba LED LCD2306 more grainy than CCFL?
