So I decided to try and update my video card drivers on my inspiron 6000. I went to the guide here forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258626 and, in a stroke of genius, installed the ATI Catalyst drivers suite even though it didn't support dells.

Oh also, my laptop's lcd is also broken so I'm using an external monitor. Unfortunately after installing these drivers, my display resolutions were completely messed up. Now I can only select 1280x800 pixels for screen resolution when i go into the display properties even though the native resolution for my monitor is 1600x1200.

I tried a system restore but it didn't do anything.
I also tried going into display properties, settings tab, advanced and in the dispalys tab I can click on the "Monitor" button, the DCC information says that the "Max Reported Resolution" is 1600x1200.

How can I get this working again? I would appreciate any help because I use this computer for photoshop and cannot work while my display is all messed up.

    Thanks in advance

I would start by rolling back out to the Dell website and downloading and installing their latest driver to see if that will get you back up and running.

Otherwise, it sounds like the issue might just be a matter of tweaking your settings in the display properties menu or driver itself. Did you make sure to check off that you want the connected display to be primary and the only one working when you are plugged in?

Hey mgh_a1 thanks for the reply. I'm going to try and roll back to the dell drivers. Do I need to do anything special for that? For example, uninstall the current drivers in safe mode, then install the dell drivers?

Where can I check off to make the connected display to be the primary? If I do an "identify" monitor check, the 1 shows up as my external. The interface for setting this up is kind of confusing...there are like big buttons that turn gray or red depending what I press and no help text whatsoever to indicate what they do.
