Hi, My first post so I hope I am posting in the right place.

Today my touch pad on my Inspiron 9400 decided not to fully work.

The only thing which is not working is the function of when tapping on the pad to open up a file etc. Nothing now happens.

I have connected an external mouse & it works fine.

The touch pad also works 100% with the media direct section of the computer, when playing a DVD etc. So it can't be a hardware issue.

I have run the diagnostic checks I got an error code OF00:136C IDE device failed media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with digital data (resource CD, installation CD)

    Don't know what that means.

I have checked through control panel & it is not showing ! against the touch pad icon.

Any one any ideas of how to get the touch pad fully functional again would be gratefully received.

    Ian

Have you installed Synaptics software? It's the utility that controls the touchpad and side scroll bars. Also what does device manager say? Do you have any caution signs next to the device in question? You should have "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad" under "Mice and other pointing devices".

    Hi Rodknee,
    Thanks for your response.

    To answer your points:

    Q. Have you installed Synaptics software?
A.This was pre-loaded with the laptop when it arrived. I have not re-installed the software off the Synaptics site. Do you think I should try that?
Also I have up-dated the driver from the software on the laptop as this model does not come with a re-install CD. Not solved the problem.

Q.You should have "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad" under "Mice and other pointing devices".
    A. Yes that it correct. It states that it is working properly.

Q.Also what does device manager say? Do you have any caution signs next to the device in question?

A.There are no caution signs next to the "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad"

Q.It's the utility that controls the touchpad and side scroll bars.
Just had a look in here & set the controls back to default.

IT'S NOW WORKING, PROBLEM SOLVED, THANKS VERY MUCH RODKNEE. I AM ALL READY FOR WORK ON MONDAY. (WORK FREELANCE)
