[?] My friend has a 5100 and neither one of us can figure out how to disable the touchpad while using a standard mouse plugged into the USB... Is there a way to do this on the 5100 without buying a program online? Also, is there a way to do this on the 8600 - the notebook I'm probably going to buy within a week or two.

I want to know because it gets irritating when you're typing stuff and you keep accidentally hitting it and relocating your blinking | and then you're suddenly typing somewhere else.

Thanks for any info in advance. [ ;)]

I am not sure on the 5100, but with the 8600, if you go to control panel, then mouse, you should have the option of disable buttons and touchpads.

    Hope that helps.

My 9100 has the alps software, and it lets me disable devices and such and change the settings. one of the settings is to disable the touch pad if a key is being pressed.. that should solve your problem, thats if you can get the alps softwar for your machine

On my Inspiron E1705, the touchpad configuration in the system tray has an option for Disable Touchpad/Stick when a USB pointing device is present.
