    Dear Friends,

I have got dell vostro 1400.

Some times when I start the laptop, the touchpad pointer gets stuck upwards and downwards, while moves left and right , then how I activiate it by pressing the touchpad buttons two to three times . So can anybody say some thing about this probelm, because this problem has been observed by me many times, but not every time. though alps driver is also installed for the touchpad.

Thanks , and wait for the reply.

To clarify a little, do you mean that when you move your finger over the touchpad, regardless of the direction, the cursor only moves up and down?

If that's the case, my recommendation would be to check your Alps driver software first for a Vertical scroll lock or Precision scroll feature that may have gotten enabled. Normally, these things are there so you can draw straight lines in some touchpad software. It'd be worth a look. If you can't find anything, I'd recommend removing the Alps touchpad driver and reinstalling it to see if that resolves the issue.

    Could it be the drivers?

I have the same issue... sometimes the cursor just gets stuck with minimal motion. then you hit the left mouse button a few times and it starts working.

I got XP on my V1400 and i got the latest drivers from Dell and it didn't help..

Hey, I have a Vostro 1400 since this February and overall it's an awesome laptop! But! The touchpad REALLY sucks! Only thing that really pisses me off on this laptop! I haven't had an opportunity to test the old ones, but the ALPS touchpad is terrible...
Even during the first start when I unpacked the laptop it was already noticeable... when you move pointer on the screen, it is lugging continuously and it takes a few ms until it even notices that I moved my finger on the pad... Sometimes after system start it's stuck in just horizontal movement (the pointer moves just left and right)... kind of weird device...
But sometimes (about 10% of all the time) it's absolutely all right. One would say it's the best touchpad ever... but it usually doesn't last too long. (because of this I am thinking it's not just a hardware problem... I think they've just messed up the drivers, so they doesn't cooperate well with the device)
So far I have only solution... and that is to use the mouse... if anyone finds out any better solution, please let me know...

There's a lengthy thread over at Dell's Community Forums which covers this subject, many who have posted over there own Inspiron 1520's, 1525's, Vostro 1000's, 1500's and the consensus seems to be that the AC adadpters which were shipped out with the computers which are encountering touchpad issues and erratic cursor movement are defective and Dell has offered to replace them.

Many have requested and received replacement AC adapters which for some solved the problem while others are still having the problem after having received replacement AC adapters from Dell. If the AC adapters are defective I asked in the Dell forum why Dell is still shipping them out with new computer orders?

I never got a straight answer from Dell, I was at one tome considering purchasing a Vostro 1500 with Windows XP which the deadline for doing so is June 18, 2008 but with so many owners having touchpad issues on their new Dells I'm looking elsewhere for another laptop. Check out Dell's Community Forums, the laptop section.
