edit: if this is too old, mods, I'm sorry, and please delete it :) but I found a solution to this annoying problem...

I basically gutted the drivers for the Touchpad and actually installed drivers from the old laptop from the Compaq onto the new Dell :D It works almost exactly the same now! It took a few downloads to find one that worked but the old drivers did the trick. The scrolling is nice, smooth, immediate and controlled now. Hope this helps if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. I also switched back to XP Pro from Vista and the old drivers worked the way I wanted on both OS's.

    Original post follows:

Hi, I just got a new Vostro 1500 and the scroll feature sucks compared to the scroll on my old Compaq Presario. If I drag down too fast, it scrolls immediately to the end of the page. If I take to long to scroll, it 'locks up' and no matter what I do with the mouse, it scrolls endlessly till the end of the page without stopping. Instead of being a quick way to navigate, scrolling has become a delicate balancing act of unresponsive hardware and ultra-precise finger movements. Is there any way to set it so the scrolling isn't smooth, like so it will just skip some lines instead of 'roll' down, or any insight on the 'locking' behaviour? I tried updating the driver but it's already the latest one. I am using Vista.

    Thanks!
