Howdy. I never got the travel remote when i got my 1520. Now i'm starting to think it would have been a good idea because i've been playing a lot of DVD's and videos lately and would like some control from a distance.

My questions are will it work (pause/play/volume/etc) with VLC media player? or iTunes?

Also, The dell.ca store is selling the "travel remote for XPS M1730". I assume that is the same as the one i would have got for me 1520? i'm just assuming they're all exactly the same considering they're Expresscard slot items.

Any information i can gather before ordering would be great.

Also if they will work with the 1501?

They're all the same. I think the majority of XPS 1530 users received two remotes for some strange reason....I did. I'm sure someone would sell one alot cheaper then on the Dell site. I didnt have one for my 1520, but now that it came with the 1530, it really nice to have. Especially if you watch alot of DVD's.

I got mine refurbished from Dell for $11 when it had free shipping around Christmas. It is the same one for Vostro 1400, 1500, 1700, Insipiron 1420, 1520, etc....

i've only tried briefly, but it doesn't seem to work with vlc. it works fine with windows media center and also dell media direct. haven't tried with itunes.

Damn, Without VLC support i don't think it's worth buying.

Anybody know of any other ExpressSlot remotes that will work with VLC? either IR or Bluetooth?

Trying to turn this thing into more of an entertainment machine. have all my networked media and whatnot and am fairly addicted to VLC and i don't really like those MediaDirect/Center style 'all-in-one" applications.

well, i was using a harmony remote control - which i've set to mirror the expresscard remote - and couldn't get play/stop/pause etc working with vlc. i could try it again, but won't be for a few days, sorry...

i treat the expresscard remote as a bit of a bonus if it works with programs other than dell media direct - since it's a dell remote! i think it all depends on what signals the infrared port on the laptop can receive and what programs it can then interact with.

It's fine. don't go out of your way on my behalf. i've been trying to find some results online. no luck so far. found one thing that could work but it's huge, requires terrible software to be ran, and doesn't fit in the ExpressPort.

Guess it's not really going to happen. Oh Well. I was most likely just asking too much.

the remote is stupid cheap and the price of a few beers, fits in the express slot, and works great, why on earth anyone with a dell would dother over getting one is beyond me

works great with media center, media player and itunes , and also you can use it to go throuh any folders and files, ie if youve got a my pictures folder full of other folders of pics, you cna use it to go through them and back out etc, basicly it gives you near full control of everything apart from moving the mouse cursor, its a must have piece of kit !

It being able to move around in the windows file system is great, however without confirmed VLC support it simply wont be useful. if i'll have to go over and play/pause/etc anyway, then the remote is sort of a waste of time in that aspect.

I don't doubt it will be useful by itself, but for what i need, if it doesnt do VLC, it's worthless.

However you said it works in iTunes? That's another great bonus. iTunes is my main music platform and this is a bonus. i assume itunes has to be fully running and be the top program/application active?

Also, when in the slot, does it stick out of the laptop? i know the 1720 may be different from the 1520, just curious.

Unlike the BT remote which sticks out a lot, the IR Express Card remote only protrude by ~1.5mm.
It does not work in VLC, but it works with most keys in KMPlayer.

The remote works with WMP or Dell Media Direct only. The volume control will function in any program. I picked one up for my 1520 on eBay, for $10.

It also works in WinAmp and Real Player (Play, Pause, Stop,..).
The volume and arrow buttons work in any program.

My m1330 remote works with mediaplayer classic, so long as it is the selected window. It also works with WPM, never use mediadetect (wiped it from the HDD) or the media center thing.
