Just fired up my new Inspiron 1720 (PC specs below) and immediately encountered problems with updating and running Trend Micro Internet Security 14. Could use some help with a solution...
First, I did not start with a clean install. Probably mistake number 1... After I ran an update on IS 14, several services were disabled; Real-time Network Virus Protection, Personal Firewall, and Wi-Fi Intrusion Detection. I've uninstalled and reinstalled with no fix. Each time I reinstall, the services are available and when I update, they're gone again. I've tried to use PCTools to uninstall just the Personal Firewall, won't allow it. At one point, an error message popped up suggesting that another application was causing the problem, however, no indication as to what that app might be...
Anyone encounter something like this?
Inspiron 1720
Intel C2D T7500 (2.2GHz)
3Gb RAM (Asymmetric Dual Channel)
nVidia GeForce 8600M GT (256Mb)
Blaster X-Fi Extreme (Express Card)
250Gb HDD (5400 RPM)
Blu-Ray Disc Drive
Windows Vista Ultimate (x86)

Try contacting Trend Micro.
They emailed me back within a day or two, though there might be a delay this close to Christmas.
Your problem is worse than mine was though. PCTools fixed my problem with the firewall and with updating. -
I also contacted Dell Chat Support, what an utter waste of time that was... Tech person literally spent 20 minutes confirming who I was, what my phone number is and to what address my PC was delivered. Total frustration - I finally said thank you for updating all of my account information, goodbye. -
If you're not able or just don't want to do a clean install, just delete the bloat from your system, then run an app like CCleaner to finish off the project.
About three years ago, I bought an eMachines desktop loaded with bloatware crap. As you've done, I installed TM before cleaning the junk from the new machine. Nothing seemed to work right. LOL
After cleanup TM worked very well and never again caused problems. -
Probably sounds silly but, I am a little nervous about doing a clean install... Seeing as I'm now also having problems getting Media Direct to update properly, so I can play a new Blu-Ray Disc, I might as well break down and give it a shot...
I was nervous about starting fresh because of Media Direct... Of course, If I can't gent anything I want to use to work, I might as well throw caution to the wind, lol.
Stupid me, thinking I'd get a working machine out of the gate -
Cleaning your machine will, for the most part, be as effective as a clean install. Just clean it up if you're not quite ready for a clean install. I've done it both ways - clean install is better, but not so much so that it's worth worrying and losing sleep. lol
I think you'll be fine either way and your machine will be appreciate either method. -
I just uninstalled TrendMicro as soon as I got it and downloaded Avira.

I'm in good company with both bmwrob and Bombers (I drive an '02 REX Wagon and a '97 Z3 2.8). Thanks for the replies and support guys. Ya gotta love firing up a new PC and succumbing to all of the dashed hopes of perfection that inevitably follow. This is my first new PC in almost 10 years. I kinda thought I could talk to my PC and it would obey my every command by now
Anyway, I got Media Direct to update properly (first download was corrupt, probably because of my wireless connection) but, still a "no-go" on Trend... I came across a few posts in the Dell Community Forum regarding the same issue but, no real resolution.
I've used CCleaner on my other machines for a few years so, I'll probably be installing it on this one too. There's a bunch of stuff I'm not sure about disabling on Start-up so, I'll have to go back to the threads on bloatware to double check what I can get rid of (QuickSet? Touchpad? Google Desktop? Support Center? Webcam Mngr?) I ordered a machine with no pre-installed crap, other than what I thought I'd be using but, I guess you know how that goes... -

I just picked up the January copy of PC world and they had an article on various anti-virus software suites. They noted that the Trend Micro was buggy and on two of their test units they couldn't get it to update because of the bugs.

Update...
BTW, great de-crapifying resources rob, much appreciated.
I've been updating drivers, installing some of my favorite utilities and, of course, rebooting all along my merry way. Anyway, I decided to go back and try an uninstall of the Personal Firewall using PCTools again. This time, it allowed me to uninstall just the firewall.
I rebooted and held my breath as I went back into PCTools to reinstall Personal Firewall. All went well and I now have access to all services, and the update is not running every 10 minutes prompting for yet another reboot. Gads that was a PITA! Trend Micro tech support contacted me with a three page long step-by-step description of how to uninstall and reinstall the SW. I may not be the most savvy PC user but, yikes, was that in no way helpful, LOL.
So at least one issue got resolved... Unfortunately, even though Media Direct took the most recent update, it still won't play some of my blu-ray discs. Now I just have to figure out why Media Direct is still being cranky. That'll be a post for another thread. -
Just got my new XPS 1530 and the trend micro internet security suite will not update as many have previously described--so it is gone. Using Kaspersky since I have it on my other computers.
Love my new Dell 1530.
