I already had the 700M with true life and it's awesome. Now I got the XPS M140 and the true life display on it seem to be missing something. It seems to be the contrast control. It's like I'm looking through a screen when I'm on a web page that has a white background. It's not sharp and clear like I'm looking through a window like in the 700m. Anyone else experience this? Is something wrong with my display? Any way to control the contrast? The 700m has controls for gamma and other items for the dispaly card but the xps m140 doesn't seem to have those. Any feedbacks would be helpful.

They are not even close. 17" sucks BIG time. It is just a glossy cover over USXGA mate which has nothing to do with 700. Whites are off to a bluish whites, colors are dull and over exaggerated by the sharpness. Whareva...

From my personal experience, TrueLife on XPS M140 is suck. WXGA screen on this notebook seem to have a faint texture: called shimmer. it's noticeable in the light continuous tones. e1505 WSXGA screen is also having the same problem.
The LCD on 700m is much better. The only problem I have is some light leakage because of poor viewangle. -
Light leakage on a 700m???

It depends on which M140 TrueLife display you get. I got the Quanta Display, and it was one of the brightest and best looking screens I have ever used...on par if not better then the 700/710m.

The display on the 710m is great -

I'm in the same boat as Automan.... I also received my M140 with the Quanta brand display, and I haven't seen a nicer quality in quite awhile. Dell uses (used?) several different vendors for their LCD screens, I believe it's been mentioned that the Samsung model tends to have that shimmer and washed out contrast.
As for contrast control, you could try updating to the newest set of Intel drivers for the 915 chipset (GMA 900); as I understand, it does have a tab for contrast and gamma control. However, it was mentioned in a previous thread that some of the settings may already be maxed out, so it may be moot. (Also, the newer drivers require a bit more work, browsing to the folder for drivers rather than running the .exe that comes with the download. I've been too busy to give it a try, so unfortunately I can't vouch for either the installing of or improvements with the drivers)
Another option is to add a color profile to the Color Management settings, but I know even less about doing that. -

Samsung screen is garbage... got to the point where i snagged a refurbished XPS m140 with a TrueLife screen by Quanta, but I am away and missed the delivery, I'll have it in my hands tomorrow and I'll compare it to the current 630m that I own... something is getting eBay'ed or returned to Dell.

how about any difference in TrueLife between 700m compared to 710m?
and
what brand is the screen of them? -
Installing the latest drivers will give you the option to adjust gamma, brightness and contrast, (only the gamme setting is already maxed out), but you'll never get the screen to look like that 700m - there's just no comparison between the two.
there was a post about this awhile ago:

Has anyone had success complaining to Dell about their Samsung screen and gotten it exchanged for a Quanta? -

I tried to have Dell specifically send out a Quanta screen and they refused, saying it was not part of my order... so they kept sending out Shamsungs.

Good to hear someone have a nice screen on M140. It's too bad, I'm not one of those lucky people. I got my M140 about 2-3 months back and I had already returned. I like everything about the notebook except the screen.
Dell have a lot of resources around the world. They will use what ever LCD that available at that time and build it. When someone complain about "shimmer", they say it is nothing wrong with the screen. I don't want to buy any notebook with Truelife screen any more. -
I prefer the True Life 700m screen. It's nice and bright and very crisp. However it depends on what screen you have in your XPS m140. If you have a Quanta screen it is much better then a Samsung screen. Richer colors brighter... So a Quanta screen in an XPS M140 would be just as nice as a 700m screen.
