The nature of the problem is as follows: the lcd monitor has gone completely black. But it's not the LCD itself because even if i connect to an external monitor, I can only start up in Safe Mode.

I am trying to reinstall XP as a last attempt before replacing the video card.

The instructions to boot from the reinstall CD are as follows:
    1. Insert the CD (ok, no problem)
    2. Restart the system (ok, no problem)
    3. When the Dell Logo screen appears, press F2 to enter the System Setup (problem
    !)

I can't get the Dell logo screen to appear! Because if I let it start normally, I never get to the point of the Dell screen - it stays black the entire time (even on the external monitor). If I press F8 right away to get to the screen from which you can enter Safe Mode (not sure what this is called), I never get to the Dell screen.

What can I do? Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated.

re-format? do you get any images at all when booting? Usually 'safe mode' you get the basic video driver. If everything is 'black' then your video or motherboard is shot.

sorry for the delay in responding. I get no image at all when booting from the laptop. On the external monitor, I can only get right into the bios screen - I can't see anything before that.

I suspect the problem is with your video card rather than with the OS.

If the Dell logo won't even show up, you got something more wrong with it than just the OS.
