I have a friends Dell laptop here and it will only power on for about 3 sec. No lcd or fan or hard drive activity. Just a couple of leds come on, then it all goes off.
I disassembled it once already to look for something loose or corroded, only thing i could find was a lot of dust.

Usually an LED code is BAD. I would look for the user/tech manual and try to find out what that code is. Trust me, that computer is trying to tell you something.

BTW, I believe Dell computers light up the middle LED when there is bad RAM or the mobo connection to the RAM is bad. Just FYI.

Same with my sister's 5150...Also, ask your friend if he spilled anything on his laptop that he didn't tell you about ;)

There was a lawsuit involving the 5150..if that is indeed the model that your friend owns he might be able to get some sort of compensation.

They just extended the warranty another year.

There is a 5150 link on the Dell Support page with a link.
