What's the best way to setup a new M120 from Dell to get it running decently? Do they come preloaded with a lot or crap that needs to be removed? Is it best to do a HD reformat and reinstall or an the default configuration be cleaned up easily?

You really should reformat. There is quite a bit of junk preinstalled.

Yea you should. I didn't bother reformatting, and I'm regretting it. As soon as the semester is over, I'm gonna reformat my machine (and hopefully have Vista by that time).

Yes I was referring to Vista as well as the default install from Dell. It is as bad as XP from the default load?

All you have to do is reformat the drive and reinstall the OS

You really should do a reformat

my m1210 came with vista and vista blocked some preinstalled drivers for compatibility issues. I also get the NMI blue screen before the reformat and a clean install of vista fixed the problem

Dell notebooks are notorious for bloatware. Simply uninstalling all those problems never completely fixxes the problem because there are still fragments of those left behind (Particularly if they still install AOL on Vista, Heads up AOL software for Vista just came out the other day. =C ). The best thing to do is clean install.
