I recently purchased an Inspiron E1505/6400. It came with Vista, but had a ton of crap on it, so re-formatted the HD, and installed a fresh copy of Windows Vista over it. Today, I was backing up some software onto some DVD-Rs. I didnt use any special software except for the built in Windows burning software (stick empty DVD-R in, window pops up, add files to folder, click burn.) Well whenever I burn DVD-Rs, I cant choose a burn speed higher than 3x. From my understanding, the burn speed is up to 6x. I have the Optiarc AD-5540a. Reasons, recomendations, etc?
Secondly, I use msconfig to disable certain programs from starting up with Windows. However, everytime I boot up, I get this annoying promp in the corner that reminds me that some programs have been disabled from start up. I always have to go and close i before it disappears from the lower right bar. Is there a way to disable this?

To answer your first question: With windows XP, burning CDs had a limited speed, unless you purchased the software within xp?
2nd question: you shouldn't disabled every start up program. Sometimes windows needs it to have a proper boot. This is what i do. I disabled on 1 or two and then restarts computer. If all goes well, i continue. If no, i undo the changes. Hope this help -
Nevermind the 2nd question. I found the box to disable the warning message. I didnt disable anything crucial. The warning icon is similiar to the way XP gives the popup on bootup after messing with msconfig. You have to check the checkbox to disable it in the future.
I guess I need to buy some software to utilize the drive speeds. Thanks for the help. -
Burn speed can depend on the media you use. Try switching to a different brand and see what happens.
