    I purchased a headset with volume control. I turn the volume on the headset itself a bit, and the noise is gone. Then i just boost the volume in the laptop itself up.

    doesn't exactly fix it, but it won't be present any longer...

    BUT.. this volume control headset SUCKS MAJOR BUTT compared to my Sony MDR V700 DJ Headphones (which transmit the noise).

    P.S. this is not a USB headset. it's a typical headset plugged into the headphone jack.

    ya thats what I did too when i had that problem with my old 6400/1505, but I find only headphones with decent amount of base response can block out the noises. Those little apple ear buds does nothing but amplify the whining
