is there a way to completely reinstall vista but keep all the files i already have?
i have another partitian in my harddrive, its 11 gbs, big enough for all the programs i wanna keep.. what should i do? can someone tell me step by step what i should do?
will i need to reinstall mediadirect too?
-
I recommend getting hold of all the installation files for your programs, put them, and the files you want to keep into the 2nd partition, then reformat the whole thing, and reinstall everything again.
I dont have a DELL (yet), so I dont know what media direct does, but if its not on the PC after you format and re-install Vista, then yes, you will need to re-install it! -
If you don't reinstall mediadirect you save 1-2GB of HDD space but in return your mediadirect button doesn't work if you press it.

If you have another partition, you can safely leave your files on that partition as you will only wipe the c drive. else, get an external hard drive to keep your files backed up to.

how do i format my main harddrive partition? do i just put in the vista dvd and reinstall windows? or do i right click on C: drive and click format..whats the cleanest, safest, best way to format and then to reinstall again?

1. Copy required data and softwares to an optical disc.
2. Reboot computer with Vista disc
3. Delete all partitions and create a single Primary Partition and format it.
4. Continue with Vista installation.
5. Transfer copied data and softwares to hard disk from optical disc. -
im trying to do that without deleting all partitions, because i've put all my install files and documents on the backup partition

Probably best to copy your files to an external drive, like Nizzy said.
Just in case...
And you can use gparted to format

Check around figure 10 where it says "You may also format any partition to a file system which is supported in the menu." and the picture lists ntfs.
I don't know how well this works as far as configuring the Media Direct button though.
