So, I can't get my Inspiron 9300 to recognize my old 200G Western Digital Firewire/USB external HD. When I plug it in the 1394A jack, nothing happens whatsoever. When I plug it into the USB jack, windows at least finds a USB device, says it installed drivers, but then changes its mind after 10s or so and says "USB device not recognized".

    Other relevant facts:
    1) the drive works fine via either USB or 1394 on my desktop
    2) I recently did a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 on my 9300 and updated to the most recent NSS/chipset/Quikset drivers from Dell's website
    3) my USB camera and mouse have no problems on my 9300

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
